THE Commission on Higher Education in Cordillera Administrative Region (CHED-CAR) said only 88 slots are allotted for the region this year.

CHED-CAR scholarship coordinator Christopher Depnag said there were 850 applicants from around the region who wished to pass the scholarship program. The filing of the application was done from January to February, but was extended to March 27. Qualified scholars will be released next month.

"This year lang ito nagstart dahil ang balak nila is by May nakalabas na ang resulta. Before magenroll iyong bata alam na niya kung scholar siya o hindi," Depnag said.

The different scholarship programs of the commission includes the Full Merit Program which is for poor but deserving Filipino students with a general weighted average (GWA) of 90 percent and above; the Half Merit which is also given to poor students with a GWA of 85-89 percent and includes persons with disabilities; the Grand-in-Aid Program is the Tulong Dunong intended for members of minority groups, members of hill tribes, solo parents, their children and senior citizens who must maintain 80-84 percent GWA.

The "Study now pay later" program could also be availed of and is payable in 10 years.

In case of failing grades, a scholar is asked to state his reasons and is required to write a letter of reconsideration.

CHED encouraged incoming freshmen students to get courses from the Student Financial Assistance Programs.

"StuFAPS is the priority program at eto yung mga professionals na kokonti na lang especially agriculture," Depnag said. (Jesela Ann Garcia-Colegio de Dagupan Intern)
