THE Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) recently turned over a modern P20 million worth of fire truck from Austria.
BFP-Cordillera Director Sergio Soriano formally turned over the high-powered modern pumper fire truck to the Baguio Fire Department in the presence of City Government officials during Monday’s flag raising program.
Soriano said the modern fire truck are only part of the suppression aspect in addressing fires as he stressed 75 percent of the strategy in reducing fire incidents is through prevention.
“The fire trucks are only for suppression, we should never forget our prevention role when it comes to fires,” he said.
Soriano urged the public to join them in their campaign to reduce fires adding, “it is better not to use these trucks than have lots of fire incidents.”
He also suggested for the City Government to prioritize the procurement of a water tanker to supply water to fire trucks as these fire trucks require a steady and strong supply of water during operations.
The Austrian-made Rosenbauer TLF 4000 fire truck, which is specially built to respond to fire incidents in highly urbanized areas, represent half of the 76 units procured by the Department of the Interior and Local Government through a soft loan package.
The new truck has the capacity to discharge 2,400 liters of water per minute. Its water cannon can push water to up to 62 meters horizontally and 24 meters vertically – equivalent to an eight-storey building.
The trucks were acquired through an Official Development Assistance facility of the Republic of Austria, which granted a total loan amount of €20.5 million payable in 17 and a half years with an interest rate of 1 percent per year.
Baguio Fire Marshal Joe Fernand Bangyod said this is the city’s eighth fire truck.
