Mayor to stop subdivisions in La Trinidad-A A +A

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Mayor Edna Tabanda is batting for the stop of subdivision developments in the Valley.
Tabanda said the proposed move is to protect the remaining land area of La Trinidad in the light of various development plans which seem to be circumventing the municipality's Comprehensive Land Use Plan (Clup) and zoning ordinances.
The mayor said the move will be discussed in the upcoming Executive–Legislative meeting. "I will be discussing it with the Sanggunian. We need to amend the zoning ordinance as well as review the Clup," she said.
Tabanda said the Valley does not need new subdivisions as there are various lots already allocated for housing, instead the chief executive said the BLISTT (Baguio- La Trinidad-Itogon- Sablan-Tuba -Tublay) concept of development must come into play.
The mayor said neighboring areas must be utilized by subdivision developers and keep away from the Valley, which is now congested. "They should stop encroachment in La Trinidad," she said.
The basic concept of the BLISTT plan is for neighboring municipalities to benefit from the spill of the Baguio development giving way for the five nearby areas to expand.
Tabanda said lands atop the Justice Hall, Long-long area and the Lubas vicinity have been filled with subdivisions and now threatening parks, roads, forests and open spaces. "We should be very careful that we sustain the environment," she noted.
She said urban planning is to be applied in the Valley with its booming population as well as the large volume of garbage generated daily due to the increasing population.
The chief executive also said development must be tempered with the sustainability of cleanliness as well as order.
In 2010 a 9.1 hectare subdivision at the vicinity of Upper and lower Kesbeng, Buyagan and Gayasi barangay affected over 300 residents.
Complaints about water contamination and soil erosion were aired by homeowners associations in the area as well as lack of consultation with residents.
