LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- In a bid to help provincial re-greening efforts, 10,000 tree saplings were turned over by a leading mall chain.
Governor Nestor Fongwan received the donation of saplings last week from SM City Baguio mall manager Jansen Pe and SM vice president for Operations North Region Bien Mateo.
The saplings will augment provincial-wide efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change in the province.
"Reforestation and preservation of the remaining green patches in the province is also one of the major thrusts of the province," Fongwan stressed.
It was the Provincial Board which requested the mall chain to donate the trees in a resolution penned last year by Board members Johnny Waguis, Alfonso Fianza, Benjamin Saguid and Bernard Waclin.
The trees will be distributed to the municipalities of Kabayan, Bokod, Sablan, Tuba and Itogon.
The resolution stated, "SM City Baguio, being one of the biggest business investors in the City of Baguio, has been constantly participating in the City's program on the conservation, preservation and protection of the environment by extending assistance and services intended to address environmental issues and concerns.”
The donation will accelerate socio-economic growth and deter or prevent the continuing occurrence of natural catastrophe and incidents.
SM reported its employees have already planted more than 25,000 tree saplings or over half of its target to plant 50,000 trees in Baguio and Benguet in line with its "Green Road to 50,000" program.
Fongwan has been focused on the environmental issues in the province specifically illegal logging activities.
