CAMP BADO Dangwa, La Trinidad, Benguet -- Members of the Cordillera Peoples Liberation Army (CPLA) recently surrendered a total of 203 firearms to the Police Regional Office – Cordillera (Procor).
The continuous turn-in of firearms from the CPLA is in line with the memorandum of agreement (MOA) between the government represented by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) and members of the Cordillera Bodong Administration (CBA) – CPLA. The MOA is a closure agreement which is the CPLA's final disposition of arms and forces and its transformation into a socio-economic unarmed organization.
A total of 442 firearms have been inventoried of which only 203 were accounted; 22 were initially turned-in during the inventory rounds; 55 were turned-in during the oath taking of the Cordillera Forum and Peace Development (CFPD); nine in Abra; 16 in Apayao; 13 in Benguet; 18 in Ifugao; 21 in Kalinga; and 49 in Mt. Province.
In Benguet, the recent turn-over ceremony was held in Camp Bado Dangwa with Governor Nestor Fongwan as the guest speaker and attended by members of the Philippine Army, CFPDI under Tomas Tanacio, OPAPP under Director Alexander Umpar and Procor personnel.
"We are elated over the overwhelming support that we continue to get from the CPLA members who now turn in their firearms in the spirit of achieving lasting peace in the region," said Cordillera police director Benjamin Magalong.
He said they continue to encourage other CPLA members who have not yet surrendered their firearms to do so for the immediate implementation of the socio-economic provisions of the closure agreement.
The police official further said the active participation of the rebels is a manifestation of the CBA-CPLA's continuing efforts towards achieving a meaningful and lasting peace in Cordillera with the OPAPP, which is mandated to oversee, coordinate, and integrate the implementation of the comprehensive peace process to attain a just and lasting peace for the nation and for all Filipinos.
