THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) extended the filing of Certificates of Candidacy of barangay elections candidates from three days to six days.
Comelec regional director Julius Torres said Resolution 9761 adjusted the filing of COCs on October 11 to 12 and October 14 to 17 from the previous schedule of filing on October 15 to 17.
Torres said Comelec considered the increasing number of registrations and growing interest in participating in village polls as reasons for the extension.
The campaign period for the barangay elections will immediately take effect on October 18. The Comelec regional director said among the grounds for disqualification are candidates lacking residency in the barangay and candidates reaching the maximum amount of terms for elected barangay officials.
"For Comelec our job is only ministerial as we will not decide on the qualifications of the candidates immediately upon the filing of the COCs, it will be up t the candidates or any qualified registered voter," he said.
He added they are still waiting for the list of barangay officials, who have reached the maximum term limit, from the Department of the Interior and Local Government.
While the list from the DILG will serve as basis for disqualification, he stressed their denial of the COC is still dependent on a petition to be filed by any opposing candidate or qualified registered voter.
