Pursue autonomy peacefully, mayor tells Cordillerans-A A +A
Sunday, October 6, 2013
BAGUIO City Mayor Mauricio Domogan called on the Cordillerans to continue pursuing the elusive dream of an autonomous region for the Cordilleras in a peaceful manner.
"Let us continue to pursue our dream for autonomy in a very peaceful means even if it is so difficult and it appears that it is not given attention," the mayor said during the Regional Development Council meeting held recently.
"We are Cordilleras, let us make a difference," he added.
Domogan stressed that Cordillerans are peace loving people and would resort to violence just to get the attention of the National Government unlike the group of Moro National Liberation Front, which attacked communities and held people hostage in Zamboaga City that resulted in injuries, deaths and loss of properties and livelihood.
Domogan is one of the active advocates for autonomy in the Cordillera and chaired the committee which drafted and finalized the Third Organic Act for the Cordillera Autonomous Region. It was submitted to the 15th Congress in December 2011 but House Bill 5595 only hurdled the committee level.
Two organic acts for the Cordillera were earlier rejected by the people in plebiscites due to high level of unawareness about regional autonomy.
The creation of autonomous regions in the Cordilleras and in Muslim Mindanao is provided for under Article X of the 1987 Philippine Constitution. The Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao region was established in 1990. (Redjie Melvic Cawis)
