BARANGAYS Imelda Village and Balsigan were feted Monday during City Hall’s flag raising program winning in the 2013 National Search for Barangay with Best Sanitation Practices.
The two barangays represented the Cordillera Autonomous Region in the competition for 2013.
Aside from the title, P150,000 was given to both barangays to fund their respective sanitation projects.
These awardees were among the thirty-two finalists in the Philippines who received the same titles out of 120 barangays which competed nationally.
The competition is open to all barangays with “at least 75 percent sanitary toilets coverage and at least 85 percent water supply coverage.” A pre-screening for the barangays and the selection of the entry of the region was also conducted.
The competition is also a part of the Millennium Development Goals of the UN General Assembly. One of the goals is on environment sustainability which aims “to have by 2015 the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and sanitation.”
The indicators for the award will comprise “sanitary toilets, water supply, improvements in coverage during the final evaluation, diarrheal morbidity and other local sanitation initiative or projects.”
According to Dr. Rowena Galpo, Assistant City Health Officer, the program is a yearly competition backed by the health department and local government.
“Baguio has been joining this competition for years already,” added Galpo.
Dolores Mangusan, punong barangay of Balsigan said, “Ang isa sa pinakamahirap ay yung siguro documentation.” Documentation is part of the monitoring of the barangays which is one of the bases for declaring the winners. Mangusan also said barangay residents gave their full cooperation to the program.
Mayor Mauricio Domogan also expressed his gratitude and said these awards do not only bring a good impression of the winning barangays but also to the city. (Julia Manuel)
