THE Baguio City Government needs P17 million as its counterpart fund for the repair of the Athletic Bowl in time for the city's hosting of the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (CARAA) meet next year.
Mayor Mauricio Domogan said the city is poised to source out the needed amount to complete the P31 million fund requirement to repair the decrepit sports facility with the National Ggovernment committing a total of P14.7 million for the project as informed by Representative Nicasio Aliping Jr.
The mayor said the project would cover the putting up of a rubberized or "Tartan" track, an all-weather running oval and the repair of the roof and posts of the bleachers.
The mayor said the city will also consider a proposal to put up a solar-powered heating device for the swimming pool even as the city has appropriated P8 million for the purchase of the pool heater this year.
The mayor said they will also make sure improvements the city will introduce in the area will be in consonance with the planned Athletic Bowl development so these will not be wasted in the end.
The city will pursue the rehabilitation of the sports facility along with other areas at Burnham Park under a public-private partnership (PPP) venture based on the terms of reference approved by the city council.
Projected to cost P4.3 billion, the proposed development will cover the upgrading of the Athletic Bowl, tennis court and swimming pool.
It will also cover the construction of a commercial complex at the site of the former city auditorium and the installation of the monorail within the park.
Under the terms, the sports facilities upon upgrading will remain as city government properties and the revenues to be generated from their use will go to the city coffers.
The commercial complex will be run by the developer. (A Refuerzo)
