LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Benguet Governor Nestor Fongwan, widely known also as a farmer leader in the area, on Wednesday confirmed the decreased prices of fresh strawberries is due to the start of the peak season of harvest here, which is estimated to be more than 500 metric tons during the summer season.
As former mayor of this town and the one who started the strawberry festival every year during this month, he said the historic event must be supported by all people in the province and call for the enhancement of the production as the fruit cannot be raised anywhere in this tropical country.
Records show the festival is just one of the few agro-tourism events in the Philippines, which landed in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2003 when it baked the largest strawberry cake which was more than enough to feed more than 10,000 guests and residents.
Based on the retail prices of fresh strawberries in the adjacent city of Baguio, prices per kilo now range from P60 to P80 compared to last month's price range of P 150 to P 300 a kilo.
During the trade fair of the festival in the past 13 years, both farmers and processors of the fruit have derived an aggregate gross total income of not less than P10 million based on the brisk sale not only of the fresh strawberries, but also the processed products like strawberry jam, wine, candies and beauty soap.
