LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Using iodized salt may soon be mandatory in the Valley.

An ordinance authored by councilor Roderick Awingan is mandating owners of businesses to use and promote the use of iodized salt.

Awingan anchors the proposed ordinance to the national Act for Salt Iodization Nationwide (ASIN).

ASIN complies with the state policy to protect and promote the health of the people, to maintain an effective food regulatory system and to provide the entire population especially women and children with proper nutrition vis-à-vis the use of iodized salt as mandated by the ASIN Act.

The local ordinance if approved will be known as the “La Trinidad Salt Iodization Ordinance,” and will penalize offenders with P1,000 or a temporary suspension of Business Permit on the first offense.

On the final offense a monetary fine will be imposed as well as revocation of the offender’s business permit.

"Iodine deficiency disorders-involving physical and mental abnormalities including goiter, mental retardation, deaf-mutism, difficulty in standing or walking of the limbs-are reportedly still a public health in the country, including the municipality," Awingan stressed.

The alderman said table salt if fortified with iodine, appears to be the most viable option to combat the spread of iodine deficiency disorders considering it is an essential ingredient in any food preparation for public or private consumption.

Businesses will be mandated to sell and use only iodized salt as well as for the preparation of food for human consumption in the Municipality.

The ordinance was passed in its first reading in last week’s regular meeting.
