LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Governor Nestor Fongwan said the recent vegetable glut that has caused low market prices is due to cropping mismanagement.

Fongwan said farmers must learn to implement crop programming to avoid an oversupply which affects profit.

“These things really happen but can be avoided and its impact lessened,” he said.

Fongwan said the government has long asked farmers in the province to form cooperatives to be able to manage their crops and earn big.

Last week, farmers were frustrated when prices of vegetables plunged, bringing cabbage prices to a low of P1 per kilo.

Some farmers opted to go to the streets to distribute vegetables for free to the public in protest of the glut.

This as Fongwan said it is the responsibility of the farmers to ensure their produce does not reach an oversupply.

“Alam na nila ang requirements ng market and the market is everywhere, we cannot force them to purchase,” he added.

Farmers blamed the Department of Agriculture but Fongwan said the agency is exerting all efforts to help farmers. He said prices are also market-driven.

The governor said the Benguet Farmers’ Cooperative is one of the cooperatives which assure steady profit for farmers.

Early rain showers have also contributed to the untimely harvest of crops the past week. This was made to avoid spoilage.
