IN ITS advocacy to keep tourists safe and comfortable, the Baguio City Police Office officially launched its tourist umbrellas on May 17, Saturday, at Burnham Park.

The specially designed BCPO umbrellas are intended for lending to tourists who may use them anytime during the summer or rainy season.

The tourist umbrellas are available any time at tourist police posts stationed in different major spots of the city.

Initiated by Police Regional Office-Cordillera director Chief Superintendent Isagani Nerez and put into action by BCPO Officer-in-Charge Police Senior Superintendent Rolando Miranda, he said it is one of the little things that they can provide the tourists.

"We want to encourage people, we want to make Baguio the tourist hub of the Philippines," Miranda added.

Being the first in the Philippines to have the tourist umbrella project, Councilor and chairman of the committee on tourism Elmer Datuin lauded the BCPO stressing the project is "new, beneficial and practical."

"Na-eenhance din ung image ng ating tourist police officers who are always around to help our tourists," he said.

Two hundred umbrellas were initially produced by the BCPO, which are already distributed to the different tourist spots in the city including Burnham Park, Mines View Park, Wright Park, the Botanical Garden and Lourdes Grotto.

Miranda estimated a hundred more umbrellas will be produced.

Meanwhile, Datuin said in support of the BCPO's initiative, the City Council will try to contribute more umbrellas.

A valid ID, contact number and signature on a logbook are required by the tourist police officers for those borrowing umbrellas. The umbrellas must be returned within the day it was borrowed.

Meanwhile, Miranda shared he wants to have at least two battery-powered patrol vehicle for the BCPO, which are environmental friendly and will help curb air pollution in the city.

However, he confessed the BCPO will still try to look for funding.
