LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- In a bid to address the garbage problem here, more equipment has been given to Bontoc town to solve their garbage woes.

Information officer Desiree Sokoken said the municipality has been given equipment by the Department of Social Welfare and Development as well as the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Both agencies turned over one plastic shredder and a bottle crusher to help augment garbage management in the town.

Sokoken said both pieces of equipment are now being used by the town to manage their garbage.

The local green police have also been maintained composed of women elders who monitor if garbage is segregated properly by residents.

Sokoken said there are at least 10 women per barangay in place to check if segregation at source is happening in each village.

It was last year when the women elders decided to volunteer their time to focus on garbage segregation of the Bontoc villages.

The women elders started to check in the common staging areas of garbage if waste is segregated.

If not, the elders will order the respective bags of garbage to be returned to the individual homes to be segregated.

All of the green police ladies are volunteers, doing the act in accordance to strict segregation policies set by the municipality in the wake to orders to get the garbage in order and halt dumping at the Chico River.

After the Kalinga Anti-pollution Action Group, filed for a Writ of Kalikasan against the municipality for dumping of garbage along the Chico River in violation of the constitutional right of people living downstream for balanced and healthful ecology, a strict segregation policy has also been strictly implemented by the town.
