Little Kibungan braces for ‘Glenda’

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Bracing for the onslaught of Typhoon Glenda, folk from Little Kinungan are in the midst of preparation.

Former village chief and now village councilman Osburn Visaya said the village is ready to implement preventive evacuation if needed.

On Tuesday morning, the entire province has been placed in public storm signal number 1 with winds up to 30 to 60 kilometers per hour expected in the evening.

The Cordillera Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and the Office of Civil Defense Cordillera Region has advised residents in low lying areas to be alert for flash floods and landslides.

Visaya said Puguis is on alert for possible emergencies brought about by the coming typhoon.

The Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office in the Valley is monitoring movement in Little Kibungan in a bid to prevent disaster in the area with an early warning system provided by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in place to check soil and land movements in the area to alert the municipality if evacuation is necessary.

Visaya said evacuation centers in schools in the barangay are in place for possible use by residents needed to be brought to safety.

Mitigating measure has also been put into place in Little Kibungan, like the construction of diversion canals and wall reinforcements to prevent massive landslides and flooding.

The area is still tagged as high risk with the provincial and the municipal government alerting barangay heads for possible landslides during rainy days.
