IFUGAO Representative Teddy Baguilat Jr. is backing the move of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) for preservation of the rice terraces.

Baguilat said the intervention of the NCCA is a welcome action for the continued preservation of the century old terraces.

NCCA has earlier asked the Department of Public Works and Highways to halt road projects in Ifugao for the sake of preservation of the renowned rice terraces.

Road widening projects in Hungduan, Kiangan and Banaue towns were stopped because DPWH projects are damaging the terraces.

NCCA Legal Counsel Felipe De Leon and Trixie Angeles-Cruz is now awaiting a meeting with Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson to discuss how road development and conservation can be done simultaneously.

Baguilat said the temporary halt makes sure the DPWH to be more diligent and to make sure the road improvements don’t destroy the terraces.

He said road development is crucial to the province to open access roads as well as paths for people to use and make commerce easily accessible.

Access for people to transport goods as well as make tourism accessible is ongoing in the province in a bid to make travel easier, opening tourism and commence in the area.

Ifugao is still the top of tourism lists for local and foreign visitors for breathtaking view of the renowned terraces.

The NCCA and the DPWH is now set to meet to discuss the reversal of damage the road projects have caused the terraces which has damaged privately owned rice paddies.

Cruz said the damage can be reversed.
