Mayor cites better garbage collection-A A +A

THE increase in garbage in the Summer Capital might just be a result of an improved garbage collection system.
Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan told media the increase in tipping and hauling fees paid to the Urdaneta City sanitary landfill may be due to the increased volume of garbage collected.
"Well, siguro naimprove yung collection system kaya talagang nakokolekta lahat yung naproproduce na basura," he said.
The mayor explained the local government has been trying to clean the city through thorough collection of garbage which is why there is an increase in the volume of garbage collected.
"Kung hindi kokolektahin (ng mabuti), konti lang ang idedeliver natin (sa Urdaneta)," he explained.
Domogan said either the collection system in the past was not really efficient and not all wastes were collected or a lot of barangays do not have much garbage before because there was a practice of composting.
On the other hand, Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau regional solid waste coordinator Joyce Mangsat told the media after the City Council session Monday the increase in the volume of garbage of Baguio may be attributed to inefficient segregation.
Mangsat highlighted a lot of residents still fail to segregate recyclables from biodegradable from non-biodegradable.
The EMB regional solid waste coordinator also noted some barangays have lost the enthusiasm for segregation because of the pickers who have been segregating wastes.
With the current situation of the city, Mangsat suggested the urgent establishment of a waste facility.
"We need to fastrack the construction of waste facility," she told councilors adding, "Uubusin po niyan (basura) ang pera niyo hanggat di nakakapagdevelop ng waste facility."
Mangsat added there should be a massive information education campaign on the proper segregation of wastes so the people of Baguio are made aware recyclables must no longer be included in garbage hauled to Urdaneta.
Councilor Peter Fianza agreed stressing, "Greater awareness of people will lead to greater cooperation."
In the absence of a waste facility, Mangsat said the least the city can do now is to strengthen and improve the barangays' participation to ensure proper disposal of garbage will start at its source.
