THE situation at the Burnham Lake, which has no lifeguards, has pushed a lawmaker to mandate lifeguards in a bid to save lives.
Councilor Leandro Yangot said “the local government unit of Baguio City must enact laws to protect its people and all those who come to the locality to stay even on a transient basis, it is therefore imperative the city government must enact a law to protect the lives of those who may be put in peril; which is what the legislative fiat which we introduced seeks to protect.”
The proposed law mandates all Burnham boat concessionaires including owners and operators of swimming pools, resorts to employ lifeguards or trained provisions of emergency medical services.
There are at least six boat operators in the lake area where boat rides are offered and has been a traditional recreational activity for locals and visitors alike.
