Baguio's water supply seen to improve by year’s end

Friday, January 12, 2018

BAGUIO Water District has assured the public of an improved water supply once the rehabilitation of the rain catchment basin in Mount Sto. Tomas is completed later this year.

BWD general manger Salvador Royeca together with some officials of the water utilities inspected on Wednesday morning led the inspection of the rain basin renovation project worth P86,415,415 which started in March 27 last year. The project is hoped to be completed by February.

Royeca said once the project is completed, this will translate to a sustainable water supply for over 30 percent of water consumers in southern and central part of Baguio City.

“Hindi ito magagamit during the summer season, this will be utilized during the last quarter of 2018 towards the summer of 2019 but never the less our other sources to supply Marcos Highway are ready,” said Royeca.

Among the works undertaken in the Mount Sto. Tomas rain catchment basin is the improvement of its dikes, concreting of its walls and base, putting in place of its pipelines, cleaning of the whole basin and fencing of its premises to prevent encroachments and unabated dumping of waste in one of the major sources of water for the city and nearby Tuba town.

This will be the second renovation of the rain catchment basin after the 1990 earthquake.

From 600,000 cubic meters, the catchment basin can carry at least 700,000 cubic meters once the facility is filled to the brim.

Aside from rehabilitating and upgrading the Mount Sto. Tomas rain catchment basin, Royeca said they are also initiating reforestation activities within the surroundings of the area in order to address the water demands of the city.

BWD supplies more than 44,000 cubic meter daily to the city but demand increases from 55,000 to 60,000 during the peak tourists arrival.
