AI proposes bill to stop human rights violence

AMNESTY International (AI) is set to prepare eight-point legislative agenda to stop human rights violence to be submitted to the 16th Congress.

AI Philippines Human Rights Officer Romel De Vera revealed these measures will soon be proposed under the 16th Congress for review and approval. 

Mayor to BCDA: Don’t meddle with schools

“WE will be firm in our stand that they should implement the 19 conditionalities,” said Mayor Mauricio Domogan as he presented the City Government’s stand in its latest scuffle with the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) and estate manager John Hay Management Corporation.

Mayor Domogan called on the City Council to issue a resolution with a firm resolve for the 19 conditionalities to be complied with, particularly no. 14, for barangays inside the reservation to be excluded from BCDA control.

Baguio police nab 3 wanted persons

The suspects are Bok “Willy” Cajala, 62, married, native of Sison, Pangasinan and a resident of Patrick Village, Irisan; Richard Allen Badua alias Slapee Coco, 19, single, jobless, a resident of Purok 5, Barangay Gibraltar; and Mary Grace Lamjap, 38, single, and a resident of Arellano St., Barangay Gibraltar.

Baguio bids to host Apec meetings

Road accident victims get assistance

Coheco passed requisites - DOE

THE Department of Energy (DOE) on Monday testified before the Benguet Provincial Board that the Cordillera Hydro Electric Power Corporation (Coheco) followed and passed the necessary requirements during its application for the proposed hydro project in Kapangan and Kibungan.

Supervising Science Research Analyst and Geologist Winifredo Malabanan said Coheco passed their strict assessments based on three categories: the legality of the company; technical; and financial capabilities of the developer.

Central, City High still most populated schools in Baguio

Enrollment information furnished by DepEd-Baguio Schools Division Superintendent Estela Cariño showed two schools in the city center Baguio Central School and Baguio City National High School (BCNHS) are the most populated in Baguio.

Public warned vs 4Ps text scam

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Cordillera warned the public on a circulating text scam of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino program (4Ps).

Regional Director Leonardo Reynoso said the department does not conduct any raffle draw under the 4Ps and the program only focuses on implementing social protection programs with their partner beneficiaries.

Philex asks to extend Padcal operations

Beneco to buy P13-M Tranco power lines

THE BENGUET Electric Cooperative (Beneco) plans to buy the P13,865,262 worth of sub–transmission lines from the National Transmission Corporation (Transco).

On the joint application of Beneco and Transco filed under the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), the electric distributor wants to buy the three sub–transmission lines of Transco which is located in Itogon, Benguet.

National Statistics Office-Baguio clogged

PARENTS and students rushing for enrollment for school year 2013-2014, are clogging the National Statistics Office (NSO) Census Serbilis Center–Baguio City Outlet with clients reaching as high as 1,883 in a day.

NSO-CAR Director Olivia Gulla, in an interview, said their service area which can accommodate around 200 persons in any given time is now clogged by clients with the long lines reaching the sidewalks where the NSO office is located.

Coheco admits inexperience on hydro plants

THE Cordillera Hydro Electric Power Corporation (Coheco) recently admitted it has no background in constructing hydro plants after the Provincial Board scrutinized its capacity.

Coheco’s legal representative and shareholder, lawyer Jingboy Atonen admitted the proposed hydro project that will affect Kapangan and Kibungan which will be the first project of the company with no background on construction of hydro plants.

Council criticized for lack of tourism promotions

BAGUIO Tourism Council and Baguio Country Club general manager Anthony de Leon slammed the lack of focus on tourism promotions by the City Government, saying the City Council committee on tourism, parks, and playgrounds has failed to allot funds for the city’s participation in the Philippine Travel Mart, among other activities aimed to entice tourists to Baguio.

De Leon expressed his hope for a change in leadership of the committee, alleging it was focused on conducting trade fairs but failed to measure up for the needs of the city’s tourism publicity.

BALS convention set for teachers

More anomalies in Benguet General Hospital

APART from the malversation of funds, several anomalies were discovered at Benguet General Hospital (BeGH) through an investigation conducted by the Provincial Government.

Provincial Legal Officer Danio Bolislis said among those irregularities found were unexplained PhilHealth reimbursements, low payment of patients on paper compared to actual payment which is higher than the written amount, irregularities on Government Service Insurance System premiums, underpaid laboratory fees against the actual, and some irregularities occurring at the hospital’s pharmacy.
