NYC asks youth to register for October polls

NATIONAL Youth Commission (NYC) has started its information dissemination campaign for the youth to exercise their right to vote in the coming Sanguniang Kabataan elections.

NYC North Luzon area officer Jun Angeles said the Katipunan ng Kabataan is an avenue for the youth to hone their leadership skills and harnessing their discipline in serving the nation.

Angeles also added this will also help in instituting public service and good governance to the youth aged 15 to 18 years old.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec), in a resolution recently, has set the dates for Sangguniang Kabataan voters' registration to Aug. 6 until Aug. 15.

Comelec Resolution No. 9004, promulgated July 12, stressed on the value of having an "assembly of youth" in every Barangay.

Called the Katipunan ng Kabataan, its primary role according to the Local Government Code of 1991, is "to enhance the social, political, economic, cultural, intellectual, moral, spiritual and physical development of the youth of the country."

The Comelec said any Filipino citizen who is at least 15 but below 18 years of age and are residents of the barangay where they intend to vote for at least six months, may register as members of the Katipunan ng Kabataan.

"The applications for registration as members of the Katipunan ng Kabataan will be filed from 8:00 o' clock in the morning to 7:00 o' clock in the evening, at the Office of the Election Officer of the city or municipality where the applicant resides," Comelec resolution stated.

The Comelec said SK voters may register even on weekends.

Applicants must present documents such as Certificate of Live Birth, Baptismal Certificate, School Records or any other document that will establish his identity and other qualifications when they register.

The Comelec however clarified that Community Tax Certificates or cedulas or certification from the barangay will not be honored.(JM Agreda)
