IN THE editorial department, I suffer from what we call, kulang sa pansin (next to the staff box). Nobody ever wants to call up the assistant editor. They call for Sam. Or the reporters. Never me. This is convenient sometimes because irate news sources and readers often ask for the editor in chief. Or the reporters. Never me.
Things get bad though when Sam is struck by the big “G” and has to call in sick. Then I’m in charge and still they look for him. Hey look, I wouldn’t be in the staff box if I couldn’t hold the fort. Yes, the staff box. It’s that box at the bottom left page of the opinion pages of this paper where you find the names of the regular staff members of the editorial department.
And so I put my brain to work, excited at the thought of being in the spotlight, after Sam suddenly told me, “I know just the right name for your column….”
Oh, the column’s name. My fave expressions as Sam has observed through the year and a half we’ve been together in the salt mines. The first an expression of dismay, inis; the second of disbelief, gulat. “Hmmmmm” just did not fit into the equation this time.
My late father, Wilfredo (Willy, Doc or Cackles to his friends), never tolerated bad words at home. So I guess “ish” and “weh” are acceptable. Feel free to put in the expressions where applicable during my next pieces.
So there. I am May Anne Cacdac, assistant editor of Sun.Star Baguio. Give me a call sometime, will you? For reactions, violent or otherwise. And please do so before my fifteen minutes are up. I don’t forever want to be KSP.
