Values and Attitude-A A +A
Saturday, August 11, 2012
MY APOLOGIES for being “away” from this column for two weekends! It is indeed a blessing that I have my wife, Angie, to fill in for me. Of all the “hats” I appear to wear, it seems I will be able to give up this “hat”, and go into “retirement” mode in this field soon!
“Retirement”? Let’s leave that for another article. Honestly, I was simply too preoccupied with “pressing” matters. One preoccupation was the preparation needed for my talk in the Toastmasters’ Speech Festival held at Hotel Veniz last July 28. Another was preparation for my talk with the Administrative Staff and heal
th care personnel of Baguio General Hospital, in celebration of Hospital Week.
Let me share some ideas discussed (and possibly even inadvertently omitted) in an hour and a half talk yesterday in the BGH auditorium with over a hundred “friends and customers” of the BGH…
Values are standards of human behavior. Values can change over time. They can also change from one culture to another. Religions affect values of individuals. However, what is true and right, should not change!
Principles are core values that people hold on to, fight for, and even die for!
Attitude is a mindset, a perspective, how people look at situations and circumstances. For every situation is neutral. It’s how we look at things that make them positive or negative.
Our values are shaped over time -- from birth, to adolescence, to adulthood.
Our parents, teachers, friends, church, culture, and media help form our values.
Our attitude can be changed easier, if there is a commitment, or desire to change!
As they say, our attitude determines our altitude. A positive attitude almost always leads to a happier and more success-filled life.
One bible verse that tells us how we can develop better values and attitude is Phil. 4:8-9 “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is admirable, whatever is lovely; if anything is praiseworthy and excellent, think of such things; whatever you have learned from me, received from me, and seen in me, put them into practice and the God of peace will be with you.”
My Dearest Children,
We all have our imperfections and weaknesses. We could be judgmental, arbitrary in making decisions without facts, negative in outlook, pessimistic, and have certain prejudices. I am guilty of all the above.
Filling up your minds with positive and pleasant thoughts, the truth, and the word of God will give you immeasurable strength and foundation in facing life squarely.
The challenges of life, even though many, can be overcome and surpassed with strength of character that good values, principles, positive attitude, and strong faith in God, provide!
