WITH my over four thousand social network friends that I have over a period of time invited and accepted, I say that life on earth has indeed become more complicated with the knowledge shared and revelations that a computer and web connection can reveal. The growing popularity of this new media is fast becoming the singular alternative if not replacement of its older counterpart, print radio and television.

Since I started sharing my digital photos, artwork and blogs with my older sites using www.tripod.com and www.multiply.com portals, I was not only able to connect with fellow bloggers and online friends but I get to learn from the passions, ideas and crafts of other netizens or webbers in cyberspace. I also get to be criticized in some of my opinions and views but I also get to be supported in some civic programs and art encounters that I initiated.

In trying to promote the organically grown Arabica coffee of the Cordillera as an advocate for a government program, I have posted an article and uploaded several photos about coffee upon my return home from an office event in Kalinga where a community received a shared services facility from DTI. One of my online friends, Chito Mercader commented “Hi, Art. I've just read your article 'Tibaldo: Of coffee entrepreneurs and connoisseurs.' Coffee has been one of my loves and hobby for some time now. We produce one of the best coffees in the world. I consider coffee as an esoteric drink. It assumes a different 'personality' that depends on the environment, preparation, etc., i.e. if you smell it in Baguio, a different kind of emotion is triggered in you, you feel a certain kind of mysteriousness, connection with nature and the 'anitos'. If you drink it in Starbucks, it just gives you a feeling of being 'in.' If you smell it in the mountains, morning right after a 'military operation', it gives you a feeling of being secure and fulfilled and want to come home.

I actually consider the preparation of coffee as a ritual. It is part of the enjoyment. Whether you smell it coming from a kitchen of an old house/hut in Baguio or in an old restaurant in the Binondo area, or just at home. Whether you use the old unwashed socks method or the vacuum flask or the modern coffee makers, drip or espresso, the preparation is part of the experience.

Yes, I believe that if the Benguet-Cordilleras group of farmers unite, we can demand 'real' good price for our coffee. For those establishments who have gained reputation for their coffee, they did something which seemed to be 'magical'; they have created a coffee blend that triggers something in the customer's emotion a connection with the environment, the establishment and the people, that sticks in their minds. This is what associates the flavor with the experience and makes them want to come back. This is not taught in any school. This comes from the intuition driven by the emotion to create a good drink that will connect them to their clients. I do order my coffee from Garcia's. 90% of my coffee beans come from Baguio. Many of my friends who come to my place here in Better Living Subdivision would swear that my coffee is the best. Our home has been 'informally' called 'Bistro Ramoncito. Love and Light.”

Mercader’s comment definitely enriched my interest on coffee which led me to shoot another question in my Facebook account that supports a photo of me holding an empty pesticide sachet in a vegetable farm…”which is better, organically grown vegetables partly feasted on by worms or veggies untouched by any crawlers but were sprayed by insecticides and pesticides?” Eight responded to the question generally agreeing to organically grown vegetables. Connor McLeod replied saying he prefers black-speckled bananas bought in wet markets rather than the branded smooth ones in supermarkets.

I posted a photo of the hard cases and metal boxes I use for my camera gears and captioned it…”sometime ago, I was unloading my gears in Bontoc, Mt. Province and a boy approached me and asked...Sir, are you a magician? I said yes, with what I do as a communicator, I employ magic tricks like make people appear and disappear and all that. I even grab people into my little machine and make them reappear in a box called television.” Interestingly, Sly Quintos supported my jest saying the boy's guess is correct “there is always the magician in each of us.”

I find my online posts as a digital library of the things that I do and have done. In one of my early provincial sorties as Information Officer of the newly created Philippine Information Agency, we often pass through Nueva Viscaya, whenever we go to Kalinga and Apayao. When I recovered the black and white photo of me with two platoons of military units under then Colonel Arturo Lumibao somewhere in Nueva Viscaya counter, I posted it in my FB account with a caption “insurgency in Nueva Vizcaya with then Col. Arturo Lumibao at the far end.” The photo shows me in my youthful days when the waistline of my pants was only 26 or 27 inches. As an Information Officer, sometimes I get to disagree to some government advocacies like the open burning of the outlawed Marijuana leaves. I once posted a comment in one of my conscience site…”Baguio City as a Marijuana Incineration Site: Philippine's summer capital should not be used as the burning site of uprooted Marijuana and the Philippine National Police particularly the DPEA should instead torch, dispose or bury these hallucenogenic materials out of people's sight and right where they got it.” Well, the site became viral as they call it in blogger’s parlance.

Recalling the most serious coup d'etat against the government of President Corazon Aquino staged by the Reform the Armed Forces Movement (RAM) and soldiers loyal to former President Ferdinand Marcos, I posted a photo of a very memorable event in my life when Metro Manila was shaken by the Christmas coup where the rebels almost seized the presidential palace. This historic event happened on December 9, 1989, my wedding day and I gladly had it posted on Facebook.
