LIKE in previous years, yours truly will be deeply engaged in at least two podium religious-spiritual and fraternal events to be held in Barangay Tadiangan, Tuba, Benguet and in the city.

With the Lord’s blessing, the 27th anniversary celebration at the Shrine of the Brown Madonna will be observed on Oct. 6 along Km. 7, Asin Road, Sitio Pacac. The place of worship inside a man-made rock cave is a project of the National Correspondents Club of Baguio under my leadership.

The shrine was inaugurated in 1986 with a concelebrated mass offered and led by the late Apostolic Vicar of Baguio and the Mt. Province, His Eminence Bishop Emeliano Madangong, together with Rev. Frs. Fred Jubac, Roger Positar and Bancaya from the Recoletos Mayor-Seminary.

The development, beautification and maintenance of the shrine is purely a work of love and sacrifice, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Trinity. It is a symbol and manifestation of our everlasting faith and enduring love to Mama Mary, particularly in our quest for peace, unity, national reconciliation and global understanding and harmony through the power of prayer.

The celebration marking the 27 meaningful years of the Shrine of the Brown Madonna will be 16 days from today on a Sunday for the comfort and convenience of Mama Mary devotees from the city and nearby towns of Benguet and other nearby provinces.

A floral and candlelight ceremony at 8:30AM will usher in the festivity, highlighted with a Holy Mass at 9AM. A fellowship hour follows. Our generous benefactors for the special occasion are BARP Foundation, Phases Learning Center, Wally Layson and family from Urdaneta City, Benjamin Aguinalde and family, Roland “Oyan” Villanueva and family and Jaime and Glo Tamsi from Nangalisan, Tuba. A borther from the Baguio Caseciaso Recoletos Seminary will offer the Holy Mass. The seminary’s choir was invited to the festivity.

By the way, the Holy Eucharist is also a thanksgiving mass for the BARP Foundation, sponsor of the Golden Years Festival-Octoberbest 2013. The monthlong festival will feature a litany of caring and sharing activities for the benefit of senior citizens in the foundation’s membership roster.

Free medical, dental and consultation services are scheduled at the Melvin Jones grandstand on Oct. 19 along with a palaro at the Malcolm Square.

On Oct. 21 the Gintong Tala Achievers Awards program honoring the 12 most outstanding senior citizens from the city and the Province of Benguet and a Pista sa Nayon will be staged at the SM Baguio atrium. Preparations for the forthcoming festival are in full swing with the responsibility on my shoulders. Event coordinators have been duly designated to make sure everything related to the series of activities are on track.

Here is a prayer to Mama Mary of the Shrine of the Brown Madonna which I penned in connection with the celebration. Please read on.

Blessed Mother of the Shrine of the Brown Madonna, please pray for me and for all members of my family and loved ones. Bless our home and make it a sanctuary of love, joy and solidarity, where everyone cares and shares.
Pray for us always. Protect us from harm and sickness. Keep us away from danger and accident. Shield us from all crimes and other evil deeds from the wicked. Help me to face squarely with enduring faith and resolve all my spiritual and moral duty and obligations and material responsibility in life.

Help me to overcome temptation, despair, misery and grief. Help us at all times from hardship and calamities caused by nature or man himself. Teach me to be humble, to be honest and persevering. Give me the strength and the will to forgive my fellowmen who have pained my heart and hurt my feelings. Also forgive me for all my sins and faults for offending others.
Make me an instrument of peace and service. Give me the opportunity to share my whole being and happiness to make other people happier, especially the poor, the oppressed and the downtrodden. Teach me, Mama Mary of the Shrine of the Brown Madonna, to pray with filial devotion, to praise and to continue loving you, Jesus and the Almighty Father with endless fidelity.

More than ever, kindly share with us your infinite wisdom and the majesty of your motherly love and blessings. Finally, Mother of Mercy, when the time comes as God our Supreme Creator designed and willed it to be, please offer a special prayer for me to your Divine son Jesus to grant my petition for a happy and peaceful departure from this world. And more importantly, for Him to let me enter the vineyard of His Kingdom in Heaven where eternal life, love and happiness reign for ever and ever. Amen.
