Growing up and flowing-A A +A

THE month of October is meaningful for me. It is the time of the year that reminds me of the inevitable fact that I am getting older.
October is the month that I remember the most because this is the time when my routine for the year is broken, and well, this breaking of routine has become a routine itself. During this time, I’ve got to do something different or go some place I’ve never been to.
This is a month of reflection for me, of going over the things that happened and evaluating them. What have I learned so far? What have I realized? What ere the changes? In short, have I grown up?
Growing up is not only biological. The accumulation of years does not guarantee that one is growing up. And so the saying, “Wisdom comes with age” isn’t entirely true. One can age, biologically, but it is not a guarantee that one is gaining wisdom. So yes, growing up is gaining wisdom.
Growing up is a conscious effort of continually improving oneself by constantly pursuing wisdom wherever and whatever it is. At least, that’s what I think. No wonder why they say that life begins at 40. I think it is true since I am still a decade and a half away. One may have really gained a profound understanding of life at that age and so life begins.
I wonder where will I be and what will I be doing on my 40th birthday. I think it’s something worth looking forward to. This year though, I’m going to Sagada, as a tourist, as a visitor, as a guest, as a friend, and as a former resident.
I’ll talk about growing up in Sagada in my next column so for now I’ll talk about growing up as this year’s theme of the Ubbog’s third journal.
Why growing up? Personally, I think there are two reasons. First, we are “growing up” and I “feel” that we can write about it although we can write about it in the coming years. I mean the perspective, how we see and experience “growing up” during this time of our lives is worth writing because of course that perspective will surely change in the coming years.
Second, though there are a lot of literatures about growing up, especially of coming of ge, I think that there must be some that would come also from “us.”
So there! The journal is expected to be released at the end of the year or if not, early next year. So watch out for it! For the meantime, I’ll go back to my own growing up!
