Parangal rites for Baguio-Benguet 12 most outstanding elderly set-A A +A

A SELECT cast of 12 most outstanding Senior Citizens culled from the Coty of Baguio and the Province of Benguet will be the main honorees of the ongoing BARP Foundation Golden year October Festival 2013 Araw ng Parangal to be held at SM Baguio Atrium Center on Monday, October 21.
The special program dedicated to the elderly achievers is set at 1:00 o'clock in the afternoon. The festival is a project of the Blessed Association of the Retired persons Foundation, Inc. in partnership with the National Correspondence Club of Baguio, the City of Baguio and SM Baguio. Prof. Federico Balanag, BARP President – CEO said the special event is in keeping with the true spirit and historical significance of Presidential Proclamation No. 470, series of 1994 by President Fidel V. Ramos declaring a week on the month of October every year to pay tribute and honor the Filipino elderly.
Silvestre C. Afable, Chairman of the board of directors of John Hay Management Corporation lead this year’s model elderly citizens who were cite for their leadership excellence and highly meritorious services in their chosen profession or vocation. Afable Jr., is the son of the late manang Cecile Afable, editor of the Baguio Midland Courier. It could be recalled the awardee was a top ranking official of in Malcañang under former President Gloria Macapagal –Arroyo. He also served as the chairman of the peace panel between the Muslim rebels in the south and the national government under President Ramos.
On the other hand, La Trinidad Muncipal mayor Edna Tabanda heads the women’s trio in the roll of honor. Tabanda and Afable represent the government sector in the awards and recognition format. Prof. Balanag said at least two hardworking and dedicated religious – spiritual leaders are also honorees. They are Rev. Fr. Joel Paduyao, Parish Priest of Don Bosco Church and Director of the Don Bosco High School at Lucban barangay and retired Pastor Maximo delos Reyes from the Seventh Day Adventist congregation.
Completing the list of the distinguished honorees who will receive the prestigious Gintong Tala Achievers Seal of excellence trophy are DepEd CAR Regional Director Dr. Ellen Donato (Education),Pines City Doctors Hospital Medical Director Dr. George Pangwi (Medicine), WW II Veteran from USAFIP NL CPl. Raymundo Gadgad (Military Service), Luisa’s Café proprietor-manager Luisa She Wong (Trade and Commerce), Lions Club past president Peter Uy Go (Civic – Social Services), Philippine Daily Inquirer northern Luzon Bureau Chief Rolando Fernandez (Journalism) and Jeorge Borja Jr., president of the Philippine Amateur Judo Association, NL (Sports).
Yours truly as chairman of BARP Special Events Committee will act as the presiding officer during the awards and recognition ceremonies. The award presenters are City Mayor Mauricio Domogan, Cong. Nicasio Aliping Jr., Benguet Gov. Nestor Fongwan, BARP chairman of the awards committee BOT Monroe Taclawan, Councilor Faustino Olowan and Prof. Balanag.
By the way, the parangal program starts with an opening prayer to be offered by Rev. Fr. Paduyao. BARPer Jaime Castro will lead in singing the Pambansang Awit while BOT Tolentino Opinano in the Pununumpa sa Watawat ng Pilipinas. BOT Menchita Domoslog will lead in singing the BARP Hymn while the opening remarks to set the tone for the celebration will be done by Prof. Balanag. Greetings will be delivered separately by Cong. Aliping and Gov. Fongwan. City Mayor Domogan is the guest of honor and speaker.
Immediately after the awards episode, the lolo-lola Pista s nayon with its beehive of cultural offering takes the center stage, BARP legal consultant Councilor Olowan and his charming wife will break the ceremonial pista pot to usher in the palabas. On the spot light are the Ginang Lola Lakambinis and their respective Ginong Lolo Lakans from Baguio, and Benguet province and Pangasinan who will be the principals in the presentation and coronation rites.
The NIIT ethnic dancers will escort the ginangs and ginongs during the presentation march inside the atrium center. The elderly celebrities are Sofia and Rolando Bautista from the city, Luz and Rodolfo Abella from Benguet and Simplicia Oficial and Lakan from Pangasinan. With pride and distinction, Gov. and madam Fongwan will officiate in the sashing ceremony, Mayor and madam Domogan in the flower crowning while Hon. and madam Aliping in the presentation of bouquet of roses to the Lakambinis. Prof. Balanag will present the honor and medallions to the Lakans.
To add joy and luster to the occasion, the potongan honorees will be entertained with a harana of tagalong love songs and Ilocano daniw. A kultura-o-rama featuring talent and skills in the highland Igorot dances, provincial folk dances and creative dances and choral singing will be the centerpiece of a competition. BOT Damoslog, our cultural show coordinator said handsome cash incentive prizes are at stake. She added the contestants are from the Municipalities of la Trinidad, Tublay, Itogon, Mankayan, Buguias and the Zumba cultural group from Pangasinan. The Board of Judges are from the Special Performing Arts teachers from Baguio City national high School namely Mesdames Carmencita Zuñiga, Rosalinfa Jamorabon and Merle Garcia.
A free rafle of attractive attendance prizes courtesy of Gov. Fongwan will end the day’s festival. The emcee of the two part program is Ms. Marlyn de Castro.
