Kafagway Roundup

Saturday, January 4, 2014

THIS is my first Kafagway Roundup column for the new year. And so, I would like to start 2014 by also extending my family’s hearty wishes and greetings to all our friends and loved ones overseas, especially my former troopmates in 507 in Dalton, Illinois, USA scouter Tom and his loving wife Marg Florek and my Order of the Arrow, BSA godfather Dave Shea.

Our troop was an outstanding unit in the Calumet Council, Boy Scouts of America for many good years. Thanks to former Scoutmaster Gerald Hlinski who knew his scouting rope from A to Z. Tom and Marg’s first grandson Calvin will be one year old on Jan. 20. Congratulations to the baby boy and his mom Jen and dad Chris. Hello to Brian and Bethany. We hope and pray that everybody in the family is doing fine and are in good health including Tom’s mother.

The myriad of activities of Silahis ng Pasko sa Baguio ended with the selection of the New Year baby Jan. 1 at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center. It was 1:29 in the chilly morning when baby boy Dionysus Victor Dacpano first saw the light of day. He weighed 2.86 kilograms, according to his mother Marisa, a 31 year old teacher at the Santo Tomas National High School, Baguio. His father, JR, is a vegetable farmer.

It was a normal delivery said assisting physician Dr. Maria Rowena Bascos and nurse Lorenza Capsuyen. The lucky New Year baby is the second child in the family.

Last Thursday morning, at about 9, the Christmas season project committee led by yours truly and the even host US Navy retiree Angel Villaralvo and his betterhalf Marie visited the mother and child at the hospital’s OB ward. The SNP officials gave the mother and baby several gift items.

The Villaralvos pitched in P3,000 and baby clothes; the City Social Welfare and Development Office headed by co-chair Betty Fangasan gave a cavan of rice, a package of goodies and fruits; the Office of Senior Citizens Affairs presented baby clothes and a blanket while Sol Padilla gave assorted biscuits and a box of juice.

Certainly the occasion was another joyous and glorious event of the 40th anniversary celebration of SNP, an annual Yuletide season offering by the National Correspondents Club of Baguio in partnership with the OCSWD and in cooperation with the city government headed by Mayor Mauricio Domogan and Rep. Nicasio Aliping Jr.

By and large, SNP 2013 was enjoyed by the city’s residents as well as visitors who were here during the holiday break. Again, on behalf of the project executive committee, we would like to thank profusely all the program participants, event sponsors, patrons, supports and the core of volunteers who contributed to the success of the endeavor which will be remembered for always.

Special thanks to the OCSWD day care center pupils, teachers and parents; Phases Learning Center; the Philippine Military Academy headed by Supt. Edgar Abogado; Baguio City National High School Special Program in the Arts classes; BAMAPCOM; PWD participants during the Special People sports fest; the lucky Baguio balikbayans from Japan and the United States; Rev. Fr. Domingo “German” Ledesma, NCCB spiritual adviser and the Shrine of the Brown Madonna, located at Km. 7, Asin Rd. Thank you to all who in one way or the other cared and shared and gave life to Silahis ng Pasko. Mabuhay tayong lahat.

Meanwhile, the 28th Annual NCCB Kafagway Sports Achievers award and recognition program is set on Jan. 18 at the Malcolm Square. The event will be graced by Rep. Aliping as guest of honor and speaker. He gladly accepted our invitation which I conveyed to him during the Rizal Day celebration at Rizal Park. Of course, our very own sportsman Mayor Domogan will be with us during the honor rites.

On centerstage are our most outstanding international athletes and a number of our sports leaders from the city and other parts of the highland region. The awardees led by wushu world gold and silver medalist Daniel Parantac and their respective teammates who were in Team Philippines.

Awards will be presented to the best athlete in the various sports disciplines like athletics, amateur boxing, judo, chess, golf, wrestling, taekwondo, pro-boxing, wrestling and ultra-marathon event including top mixed martial arts warriors.

Presently, we are finalizing the names and list of generous award presenters to ensure the prestige and integrity of the awards program.
