Ancient Aliens

-A A +A

"ANCIENT Aliens" is an addictive television series that premises that humankind’s origins are extraterrestrial. I watched its pilot in 2009, caught some episodes a couple or so years later, and just last year caught up with it in full onprojectfree.tv, which itself advises one and all to popularize the site. So, here goes. Go to projectfree.tv for free streaming of TV shows and movies.

Ancient Aliens is addictive. It is easy to get caught up in its slick graphics, engaging narrative, talking heads, and all-around-the-world location footage. Definitely, it is entertaining, and formatted to be so. But just because it is so doesn’t’ mean that it is nothing else. It presents itself as rather scientific, for which it has been slammed by “mainstream” scientists, who have labeled it “pseudoscience” and “pseudohistory.” However, at the very least, the series is also thought-provoking.

One of the bedrock theories embedded in the show is that of Zechariah Sitchin’s interpretation of ancient Sumerian texts, detailed in a whole slew of books, a couple of which I ploughed through (not easy reading) decades ago. According to Sitchin, many, many thousands of years ago, ancient Sumerians called Annunaki came to earth from a planet named Nibiru to mine the earth for gold, a resource that they needed in order to plug the holes in their planet’s atmosphere. Still according to Sitchin’s telling of the ancient Sumerian text, the Annunaki mined in Africa for the targeted gold, genetically created man as a slave race to do the mining, and genetically improved upon that slave race to create humans in their image and likeness. This last item, it has been posited, is an obvious base of the Biblical creation story. And to this I do subscribe.

In Ancient Aliens’ exploration of this theory and others, we are shown cuneiform tablets that have survived through ages of time, prehistoric megalithic structures the world over whose existence defies “rational” explanation, scientists pointing out much that is “astro” - (having to do with the stars: astro-archeology, astro-geography, astrophysics, etc.), scholars discussing these items and, if you will, connecting the dots on much of what is currently not satisfactorily unexplained - the Iranian Necropolis, Stonehenge, the Chinese army of terra cottas (Peasant workers working by hand with stone picks? Really?), the zillion and one pyramids the world over (yes, they exist all over, not just in Egypt), and sooo much more.

Me, I find myself these nights looking up at the magical Baguio night sky singing “We are stardust, we are golden…” Watch Ancient Aliens. Go to projectfree.tv and “marathon” stream it this weekend. Maybe you’ll end up singing with me, “…back to the garden…” -- albeit through the chips and the popcorn.
