WHAT’S up with SM nowadays? They seem to have quieted down. I don’t find them in the news and in any controversy lately. Are they playin’ it safe? I have noticed that even for the flower festival they seem to be out of sync or just minding their own business.

I also would have wished they took the cudgels of taking care of the rotunda and take away some controversy and slack from the city government and twist it around as a favor instead to the city and the government.

Surely they could have done a better job than what is present. I can’t help but feel some frustration with the rotunda atop Session Road. It also was the only let down and contrast of beauty from the flower floats and colorful costumes of the kids.

Decorations for the mall also seem "toned down". I would remember then, the mall was also into the "groove" with the city's fiesta. I would have thought that even with the re-routing of traffic there would have been some assistance by SM. So what the heck is happening with the mall?
They have instead decided to play it well. They have now tried to embrace everything that has come before them. They now "blend" with what can and should be. They have played their part. I would understand then when they were the "kontrabida" and when fighting fire with fire just made the fire harder to control or out of control.

Then I get the chance to sit down with PR Karen and all I see is a better SM. They have now transformed themselves, no "rebranded" I guess. They have changed. I did check for myself and found out that they have indeed changed. They do get awards too for their transformation. A caterpillar moving on and becoming a butterfly.

I am sure every Juan now knows who Michael Christian Martinez is. In the Senate I thought I saw every member of the Senate "ride on". Even the sporting bodies all wanting to be a part of his success. Also Malacañang tried to say that they did help, well that was it.

Some did play it well, MVP did give 10k USD. Nice! Now I wonder? There's only a few places where any Juan can ice skate. That is SM. But did you know that the mall indeed played it well, again. Our winter Olympian gets to skate, for free, forever!

Oh 10k USD also was given, all this even before his Sochi stint. So what's up? Why not take advantage of their ward's success. That my friends is just how they have changed. No fanfare just do it. Ma’am Millie must be doing something right for SM. They did take a step back regarding those trees, yey. They have been making the right moves lately.

Ate Tessie the biggest of the biggies only lately conceived of an idea that would bring tradition back. And it did come in a form of My City My Cuisine.

Generations passed heirloom recipes all compiled from North to South. I did get to be a part of this. Hey don't get any ideas just yet. I may sing a different tune not because I was selected but because it has "bridged" the gap of what the mall is and that it is all about FAMILY. Even brothers Henry Jr. and Hans won’t ever deny ate of what is conceived for SM.

I was proud to showcase a family tradition of boiled beef with tomato and onion with saba. As a child my dad would mix in a bowl all of this and feed me, my siblings and cousins. We all had to line up for what my dad had, not to mention that this was with just one spoon for us all.

Forty years ago and I still have vivid memories of what my dad and grandmother made. We had this every Sunday. Today I get to continue the tradition, thanks to SM. Now many other families get to reminisce on what traditions they may have had. And now it is compiled in a book. It may not seem that fancy as a cookbook but it is not that that makes it what it is, it is the thought and what is inside.

Another caterpillar. Generations passed cuisine was it, I together with a 14 year old son of a Vice Gov. and the wife of a Governor seem to be third or fourth in a generation of continuing such recipes for every Juan to know.

Honestly I would have prepared some other, but then it had to be that heirloom recipe. I also got to meet industry personalities like Chef Claude. A reunion too with my classmates in a course we took in Geneva sponsored by the UN. So you see it has brought together families with different backgrounds all in one book. Now I know what's cooking with SM. Oh I do get to be the first presentor in the book, hehe. Among all others it is I who gets to be uno, not the one, just the first. I never knew, believe me. No playing favorites here. In fact I was just surprised to be invited but I never expected it.

That's Life! Many lately have noticed that I do cook, I'm just thankful that, this cookbook highlighted this God given talent I have. Just like me and the mall, we have changed, that is for the better. I just love to play Dad to my kids, thanks then to SM for showing every Juan this other side of what I am.

Just like what I see in SM, continue to showcase that other side too. The better side. Let me let you in on this, as I wore to the occasion this Nardas coat, ma’am Tess will now embark on My City My Craft next. Ninang Narda get ready, they must be cooking something for you this time.
