Baguio Stories

WE NEVER cease to marvel at how Facebook connects us. We catch up with long lost friends on FB. We meet new ones, even. We keep in touch with loved ones an ocean or two away. We maintain relationships with friends and family, share pictures, react in real time to what’s up and about -- all on Facebook. It’s a miracle.

So one fine night, I’m on FB, and up pops a message from one of my students, Lany Louisse Damasco Ramos Runas. I include her whole name here because names are one of the ways we FB-cally trace relatives – connections -- obviously. Her message states that she had read this column’s piece, later posted on my FB page, about Jose Olarte, “Love Story,” and that her mother had been at the wake that very same night that I had written of. Talk of a small world.

To make it even smaller, she calls the late Dr. Purificacion Ramos Claridad “Lola Puring.” Whose son is the good Dr. Dionisio. Who is married to the good Dr. Louella. Who is the daughter of the good late Atty. Ben Rillera and the good Nenita, nee Molintas. Who is the cousin of my father -- whom she refers to as Andring – and is thus my aunt. And so it goes on, actually... Yeah, talk of small towns.

But here’s what make my writer’s heart just go boom. Lany writes “… One could easily relate to your stories, and somehow share the nostalgic feeling about it. Maybe Baguio isn’t gentle anymore, but memories and the feelings, if told, will always be something that would prove that Baguio was once like that and maybe it could be gentle again. I am planning to print all your stories, the gentler days, and give it to my son when he already knows how to read. That’s how your stories touched me…”

She had me at “give it to my son” – and I was teary already. While Lany thanks me for the stories, I’m thanking Facebook for being there as a platform from which to re-”share” them many times over.
