THE celebration of International Women's Month is even more meaningful as six women behind the success of Cordillera's most popular traditional arts and crafts were feted in the culminating program of SM's My City, My SM, My Crafts: A Celebration of Traditional Arts and Modern Philippine Design at SM City Baguio last Saturday.

Cordillera's pride Narda Capuyan of Narda's was recognized for her big contribution in the development of unique arts and crafts considered as global products. It may be recalled that she was also awarded on November 2013 as Small Business Entrepreneur of the Year nationwide.

Pynky Magsano of PNKY, Evelyn Ibay of Ibay's Silver Shop- the leading silver jewelry company in Baguio City since 1975, Hermelita Tundagui the owner of Ron and Mar Woodcraft, Easter Weaving General Manager Virginia Doligas, and Philippine Treasures owner Loly Gomez were also acknowledged for their big contribution in the industry.

Meanwhile, wood carvers from Ifugao Bamboo Arts also received appreciation during the event.

"We take pride in recognizing the most important business luminaries in the region and the nation for giving pride to our region through their global product, the best of cordillera products," Department of Trade and Industry Cordillera Regional Director Myrna Pablo said.

For his part Mayor Mauricio Domogan also personally acknowledged the important role of the artists/entrepreneurs contributing to the growth of the economy in the region.

"I am sure that what you started will inspire the different individuals to follow your example'" Domogan said.

The mayor also lauded the management of SM City Baguio for organizing the remarkable program highlighting the unique products of the local exhibitors.

Pablo on the other hand expressed hopes for a longer partnership with SM where there will be a permanent showcase and selling of cordillera products depicting the unique and colorful culture of the region that needs a more proactive and high level of promotion.

My City, My SM, My Crafts presentation to all the cities where SM malls are situated is a joint project of SM, DTI's Bureau of Domestic Trade, and other groups whose aim is to promote the traditional arts and modern Philippine designs.

The program is an offshoot of the nationwide campaign of SM showcasing the best of Philippines' regional cuisine through My City, My SM, My Cuisine, the pet project of SM Vice President for Marketing Millie Dizon which was presented at the summer capital on September 22 last year.

Dizon spearheaded the culminating activity of My City, My SM, My Crafts together with SM Regional Operations Manager Cesar Bondoc and SM City Baguio Mall Manager Engineer Marc Janssen Pe who also warmly welcomed all the guests and participants in the event.

There is no doubt the Cordillera is a home for outstanding crafts makers and artists. A greater appreciation for their authentic works will be more felt if shown in a variety of venue where more people can witness its beauty. SM City Baguio offering their doors for this opportunity is a big support for all the entrepreneurs and artists in the region.
