EXPECT the improvement of the Baguio Athletic Bowl to commence right away once the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) gives the go signal for the release of the budget.

Baguio Representative Nicasio Aliping said the city will just have to wait for DBM nod to start the rehab of the dilapidated sports facility after being endorsed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

“Right now we are just waiting for the go signal from DBM for the project to transpire, since it has to undergo a long process, we should just wait until then,” Aliping told Sun.Star Baguio.

The congressman said he is optimistic it will be granted early knowing the project is part of the 2014 national budget.

“There should be no place for worries whether the project will push through or not since all we are just waiting for the approval and I am pretty sure it will be very soon,” Aliping added.

The lawmaker earlier proposed a P14.7-million budget through the DPWH asking to build a multi-purpose building for the athletic bowl.

The project re-alignment was made since the target improvements are supposed to be focused on the oval’s tartan tracks and improvements of the drainage inside the sports facility.

Aliping said earlier the project is part of the first phase improvement of the area.

The lawmaker added he has already submitted a request to the DPWH for another P20 million in 2015 to be used as additional funding for the area’s improvement.

The Summer Capital is speeding up the improvements of the city owned sports facility in time for the hosting of the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic association slated next year.

“If ever we can start the project in the third quarter of this year, we will make sure that at least it will be done in a 24/7 basis to speed up the construction especially that we will host CARAA next year,” Aliping quipped.

Meanwhile, Mayor Mauricio Domogan said the city will source-out another P17 million supplemental budget to include in the said project.

The mayor said once the improvements for the facility are done, it will only be used for its intended purpose.

Aside from the P31 million total budget, the city also earmarked through the request of the city sports office another P8 million to replace the swimming pool's heating system. (Mark Victor Pasagoy)
