SOMETIME in the past, a national newspaper came out with a culinary article and mentioned that if one likes delicious food, he has to try Baguio! Indeed, with most ingredients available in our city, not to mention the freshness of vegetables and fruits, easy accessibility to poultry, sea foods and meat, our city becomes a gourmand’s delight!
As in any other place in the country, Chinese restaurants are popular though different in price ranges. Why Chinese food is often good, is beyond me. This despite our bickering with mainland China on who owns what areas and who has to apologize for unfortunate events in Manila between Filipinos and Chinese! It must be a historical or cultural taste or something?

There are two Chinese food restaurants here that are expensive and others which are very reasonable but still deliciously good. It’s an individual choice actually. Some won’t touch Chinese food. Others go for it anytime. The malls in the city boast of a number of eateries to satisfy one’s palate but one needs to be careful still. Food in commercial eateries is not always perfect. Human error comes in at times and a customer can get some tummy bugs or get indigestion due to too much eating. Be moderate please.

The food stalls near the Wright Park area are also interesting to many people. The place is a conglomeration of different cuisines, from the east and the west. Try them sometime. And... if one likes to go exotic and very culturally native, we have dog meat and pinikpikan. Why the ban on dog meat was not very successful is perhaps the cultural aspect of the delicacy. Believed to have medicinal values, dog meat had been food for the Chinese emperors hundreds of years ago, and perhaps our people got the practice from them too.

Ilocano dishes come cheap and healthy in many restaurants; the Tagalog sinigang becomes special, based on who makes it and what sour spices are used. These are available everywhere! Native lowland food like lechon kawali, Bicol express, laing, mongo, boiled crabs, shrimps, grilled sea foods, etc. are attractive hunger quenchers. What with fresh coconut juice and many other Philippine fruit drinks like green and yellow mango, guyabano, strawberry, watermelon, cantaloupe, calamansi and an endless list of juice-producing fruits, our city and our country in general can be called an Eden.

Oh, not to forget, every eatery in Baguio should have strawberry juice or strawberries for dessert. We have to sell our own produce you know.

Speaking of desserts, many people say that the cakes and pastries made in Baguio are more delicious than those made elsewhere. Some bakers say it has to do with the altitude of the place when baking. Is this true I wonder. Tasting our cakes though, one can say there must be some truth in it.

And another important thing, salads must always be available in Baguio restaurants! We have a whole market of fresh vegetables and fruits and many interesting combinations can be prepared by creative chefs! Happy eating, Baguio!
