THERE will still be cool breeze and fresh scent of pine trees to be enjoyed by the next generation to come in the City of Pines. That is the hope of the Baguio Burnham Lions Club.
To realize this dream the BBLC has intensified its campaign for environmental protection program particularly on a greening project at the Wright Park, their adopted area. The project started in 2012 under the auspices of the BBLC Committee on Environment headed by 2nd Vice President Isaac "Ike" Espiritu.
During the observance of Eid-al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan on July 29, members and officers of the BBLC took time to revisit the park and planted another 50 seedlings of Benguet pine tree. This is in addition to the more than 150 tree seedlings they have planted two years ago which are now more than two feet tall.
Espiritu said the tree planting activity is also the Lions way of saving humanity. "It feels very good whenever I plant. I feel than I am helping somebody. Planting now will help the future generation," Espiritu added.
The implementation of the significant environmental initiative was also attended by other members and officers of BBLC including Treasurer Cesar Napoleon Balagot, Director Paz Atos, Secretary Allan Atos, and member Lorna Weber. President Ed Amansec is the new BBLC leader for Lion Year 2014-2015.
DENR-CENRO Baguio Forest Ranger Abelardo Yaptan and Extension Officer Herson Felipe also supported the project which is in line with President Noynoy Aquino's National Greening Program through Executive Order No. 26. The order states that the priority for the implementation of NGP is for the planting of trees in up to 1.5 million of hectares of lands from 2011-2016.
"Every partner is encouraged whether private, government, and non-government organizations to do tree planting," Felipe said.
Participating in a tree planting activity is one of the many ways on how an individual or group could contribute in the campaign for the protection of the environment. Let us all work together in creating the safe and healthy environment that we would like the future generations to have.
