EAT Right For Your Type (1996) is the title of a book by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo with Catherine Whitney. It is a book that presents four different lifestyle diets according to respective blood types. So there’s essentially a prescribed diet each for blood types O, A, B, and AB.

The book came to the attention of some of us in the UPB College of Arts and Communication because one of us, Shine Queri, swears by its principles. She’s also largely vegetarian, as a few of us likewise try to be. Her blood type is A, which is my blood type, too. So I’ve made myself a copy of the book. It makes for interesting reading.

There’s a mini-history related to each blood type “identity” or genetic code. Type O is presented as the oldest type, dating from Cro-Magnon man in Africa, from where, according to D’Adamo, bands of hunters moved out into Europe and Asia by 30,000 years ago, and thus “seeded the planet with its base population… the predominant blood type even today.”

From Type O mutated Type A, which “initially appeared somewhere in Asia or the Middle east between 25,000 and 15,000 B.C. in response to new environmental conditions.” These conditions were those in place at that time because people were then agrarian, which D’Adamo stipulates and then relates to that blood type A people are naturally vegetarian. Just as Type O people are thus naturally carnivorous – having had to thrive in and rule the “hunter” age.

Like backgrounders are given for blood types B and AB. Then there’s technical talk about which antigens are found in each blood type, how lectins act in each of them, too. The bulk of the book is devoted to which foods are good for each type, with sample diets, with matching recipes!

I have a well-known wariness for data texts written in the last century, even telling my students to stick to using data sources/theories that are copyrighted in this century, preferably in the last 10 years or more recently. But I’m doing some testing myself, with D’Adamo’s Type A diet. Let’s check it out, shall we. Also, if Shine is a sample to go by, the diet works.
