HAIL to the Filipinos!
This is a shout out to Gilas Pilipinas and the Overseas Filipino Workers in Spain for their overwhelming support for the country’s campaign in 17th edition of the FIBA World Cup.
Despite losing to stronger foreign teams, who won not via landslide but by a hairline, Gilas Pilipinas has proven its worth. It is now a threat to international teams.
This because of their collegiate like going after the ball attitude, tenacious defense, timely three pointers, potent assists, never say die attacks to the basket, and of course, the combined support of the OFWs which showed the Filipinos’ enduring nationalism unmatched by other countries.
In the Philippines, our countrymen, me included, are one in congratulating the performance Gilas Plipinas and the OFWs have shown.
This might be similar to the first win of UP against Adamson in the UAAP.
Even sports patriarch and Ateneo alumnus MVP said that UP's single win after 27 games showed the indomitable fighting spirit of the Iskolars ng Bayan.
Was that because of the fish balls?
And did they celebrate! UP's bonfire celebration is a testament to overcoming all odds despite the challenges.
In the case of Gilas Pilipinas and the OFWs in Spain, even with the country’s loss, a bonfire is just right!
Yes the Filipinos have shown they deserve to be in the international arena.
A bonfire will celebrate the return of the Filipinos in international competitions.
A bonfire is fitting for all those OFWs who in one way or another, supported our national team.
The late Senator Ninoy Aquino said, "The Filipinos is worth dying for.” Former President Fidel Ramos said, "Yes, the Filipino can.”
And President Noy in his last SONA iterated, "The Filipino is worth living for.”
But for now, a bonfire is timely for all Filipinos in our country to show other countries that the Filipinos have! Yes, the Filipinos have! And again, yes, the Filipinos have!
The Filipinos have shown the heart of a true warrior overcoming the odds.
And once again, YES, THE FILIPINOS HAVE!
