Mendoza: Where death threatens, the brave is there

Sunday, April 28, 2013 - 06:37 p.m.

IN A sense, sports is like showbiz. Always, the show must go on. The Boston Marathon was bombed but the London Marathon must go on. On April 22, exactly seven days after two life-claiming bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, the London Marathon was flagged off as scheduled.

Cariño: Bonanza

Friday, April 26, 2013 - 09:13 p.m.

BONANZA. It was this iconic western television show that used to air on Thursday nights in Baguio when I was a girl. It was on at 7:00, and took us from our living rooms to that of the Cartwrights, in a house on their Ponderosa ranch.  On that ranch lived Ben the father and his three sons: Adam, Hoss, and Little Joe. And there was Hop Sing the Chinese cook.   Audiences watched and loved the adventures and misadventures of this Cartwright family whose Ponderosa was near Virginia City of wild west fame. Bonanza ran for a record 14 seasons. Though in Baguio, that was less. The show just disappeared sometime when I was in grade school. To be replaced by The High Chaparral.

Del Rosario: Rushian or Patient?

Friday, April 26, 2013 - 09:12 p.m.

THOSE who know me would say, “Michael is not patient! He is very impatient!”

Ask my children! Ask our staff. One manager even calls me a “Russian”, actually a “Rush yan!” According to her, almost everything for me is “rush rush rush!” It’s true. I appreciate “Action Agad!”, and “abhor” actions of “slow pokes”. Once a decision has been made, I want to see things happen, and happen quickly.

Dacawi: A way of giving meaning to Mother’s Day

Friday, April 26, 2013 - 09:11 p.m.

TWO women, of the same age and names, are in distress.

Emilia Casio-Tallongen, a 51-year-old Baguio street sweeper-turned day care worker 1, is trying to raise P12,000, the cost of her fourth chemotherapy against cancer on May 5 at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center.

Dumaguing: What to Do to a Pregnant Diabetic

Friday, April 26, 2013 - 09:11 p.m.

OBVIOUSLY, the pre-natal needs of a diabetic whose pregnant are quite different from those women, heavy with a child but whose blood sugar.

Diet, especially carbohydrates-rice, pasta, noodles, bread, potatoes- has to be monitored and balanced; carbohydrates are the primary source of energy but too much of it will flood the blood with excessive unused sugar. Fiber is known to slow down digestion and absorption of nutrients, thus it helps control blood sugar levels. Eat meals and snacks on a regular schedule, small but varied amounts. Add a light snack before bedtime.

Bautista: It's more fun in GOD's plan (end of the beginning)

Friday, April 26, 2013 - 09:10 p.m.

I HAVE always loved being around kids. It was for me GOD's plan to be amongst their generation. All before my time in public office I was doing constant work for kids. A creation of a foundation for Youth, Education and Sports. Yes! It's the YES Foundation.  We did programs for Day Care Centers, we termed it "care for day care" we simply just chose to just that, care for them, that simple. No "adoptions" just doing what can be done. Blackboards to pencils anything that shows... care. Another one was "change for change", we simply asked for your "barya" yes those round pieces we just throw, leave or give away. Did you know that your change can make change? A Piso is all it takes to make "patak" little children (10 of them) for immunization. I have been away from public office, but thru the Fernando Rosa Bautista Foundation, all these continue to this day.

Bayan: Baguio Liberation Day Celebration

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 - 11:17 p.m.

APRIL 27, 2013 marks the 68th Baguio Liberation Day Celebration. This is a very significant date for Baguio and Benguet way back in 1945, as this is the day where the U.S. Army and the 66th Infantry was able to enter and liberate Baguio from the Japanese forces.

Cajucom: Wistful

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 - 11:17 p.m.

IT’S my Mama’s birthday today. Memories keep flooding back, and I probably am entitled to be wistful, just for today. Happy memories of when she was still around are enough to warm my heart and put a sweet smile to my face, but the thought that she is no longer around for tight hugs, sweet birthday kisses, or simply just being there to listen to me rant about my long day at work and plans for the family is likewise causing a pain in my heart that is enough to bring about a withdrawn stance. Sometimes, late at night, there is that moment between being fully awake and near sleep...

Macasinag: Counter intellectual policies

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 - 11:16 p.m.

ONE factor that contributes to negative opinions of managers is their subscribing to unethical practices and counter intellectual policies. An example of this is when managers delegate responsibility based on personal preferences and not on the basis of qualification. This practice is particularly odious on three counts. First, it does not properly utilize personnel resources; second, it does not help build an ethical work environment; third, it reflects the lack of leadership and management skills.

Kinnud: Gotad

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 - 11:16 p.m.

GOTAD is a grand feast of the Ifugaos. As with other Filipino fiestas, it is characterized by music, dancing, food, and wine. Many would describe the term more specifically as prestige feast. It is because in earlier times, it is convened by a couple who are worthy or who can afford. They are the so-called kadangyans (rich).

Domondon: Law enforcement NPA style

Tuesday, April 23, 2013 - 11:23 p.m.

THE recent attack and wounding of Gingoog City Mayor Ruth de Lara Guingona, wife of former Vice President Teofisto Guingona Jr., at an New People’s Army (NPA) checkpoint in Misamis Oriental shows how brazen and desperate the rebel armed group has become -- openly thumbing their noses at the government.

Fernandez: The MDGs and you

Tuesday, April 23, 2013 - 11:22 p.m.

YES. Let’s talk about the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) this time.

I am quite certain that we often hear or see the acronym but know a little or worse, nothing about these goals.

Carino: The fight for vice

Tuesday, April 23, 2013 - 11:22 p.m.

THERE’S some sense to what analysts of local politics have said that Board Member Rogelio Leon’s decision to abort his bid for vice governor of Benguet has turned the battle for the said position in Board Member Nelson Dangwa’s favor. Had Leon remained in contention, the bet for him and town mate Nelson D. would have been fifty-fifty and the chips would have flipped over to the side of graduating Board Member Juan Nazarro Jr.

Acofo: Up the level of the game

Tuesday, April 23, 2013 - 11:21 p.m.

“I AM the voter, the campaign leader, and my candidate(s).”

De Leon: What’s in a name?

Monday, April 22, 2013 - 10:06 p.m.

THE electoral campaigns are heating up. The signs are everywhere. Posters and tarps and every conceivable form of advertisement by the candidates prevail in every post, corner and street in the city; to say nothing of the cheesy or catchy jingles playing on the airwaves and political ads in print, broadcast and the social network media. It’s a name game. It’s about who gets the most media mileage, exposure, the most recognition, and who has the best reputation or has worked most for “brand” retention.

Tibaldo: Settlement of conflicts in the barangay (last of two parts)

Monday, April 22, 2013 - 10:04 p.m.

THE “Katarungang Pambarangay” or the barangay justice system of the Local Government Code was enacted to help lessen the burden of the courts by settling conflicts and disputes at the barangay level.

This type of conflict resolution or mediation somehow follows the traditional way of settling disputes among members of the community where an in-between body acts as the moderator that sees to it that both parties arrive at a peaceful solution or agreement. In most cases affecting members of the community, the Lupon or the Barangay Chair acts as the mediation officer.

Domoguen: Yearnings of the heart (From ‘Deep waters,’ an unpublished memoir)

Monday, April 22, 2013 - 10:02 p.m.

THERE is a place in Maddela, Quirino called Pedlisan. Yrneh’s father was part of a crew of carpenters and lumbermen from Fedilisan (originally known as Pedlisan), Sagada, Mountain Province who went there right after the Second World War.

Why and how this crew migrated to Maddela was a long story. Yrneh’s dad, Leunam, would not have joined this group if the family remained intact. The family lived in Mabbela, Fedilisan or Pedlisan, Sagada. In Quirino, Pedlisan is a barangay in the town of Maddela. Yrneh thinks, that should have been spelt Mabbela. He kept the thought to himself.

Guinaran: The parable of Oscars 2013

Monday, April 22, 2013 - 10:02 p.m.

WE ARE most pleased to welcome this year’s Outstanding Students of CAR and congratulate everyone who nurtured them to be the well-rounded young men and women they are today.

As program standards head of TOSP-CAR, let me interpret the figures that we have encountered during this search. In 2011, we incorporated measures in our attempt to make the screening most objective and to standardize how nominee profiles are translated into numbers and figures. I review the data from 2011-2013 and note that some realizations are palpable.

Brett: Work Blues

Sunday, April 21, 2013 - 07:20 p.m.

THAT attack of Monday blues that eventually turn out to be Tuesday blues, then Wednesday blues, until the only time of the week you will feel alive is during the weekend again. It’s that all too familiar encounter with an overwhelming rush of anxiety and stress that comes with knowing that it’s yet another day to face the rigors of work.

Ma-epal a posters…Na-Epalnek!

Sunday, April 21, 2013 - 07:19 p.m.

NAEPALNEK a di nakakuti dagiti ma-epal a posters idi nagna itay nabiit ti Operation Baklas ti Comelec nga inasistaran ti nadumaduma met nga ahensiya. Mayat tapno agnakemda, dugsit  dagiti nakasaksi. Adu kano dagiti nakaunget, nagrupanget, nagbugtak, ken etsetera pay a reaksiyon.

Developing Appraisal Skills (II)

Sunday, April 21, 2013 - 07:19 p.m.

LAST week we discussed the importance of developing appraisal skills for practitioners and non practitioners and the nature of property to widen our perspective in the appraisal function. Further to this discourse, we started elaborating on the definitions and features of property.

Cayading: The Philippines (A fooled nation)

Sunday, April 21, 2013 - 07:18 p.m.

THIS is a reprinted article written by a certain Bryan which this column found to be a worth sharing piece for everyone to read and understand!

Cariño: Sunshine Lunch

Friday, April 19, 2013 - 09:46 p.m.

BAGUIO is abuzz with the sad news that Sunshine Lunch -- that decades old institution tucked away in a little nook near the “plaza” -- is closing at month’s end. This restaurant has been part of our landscape for so long that it is truly difficult to imagine a “plaza” without it.

My earliest memories of it are, as I recorded in a piece titled “Two Restaurants and a Busline,” as follows.

Dacawi: Back in the saddle again by Johann D. Dacawi

Friday, April 19, 2013 - 09:41 p.m.

(YEARS back, I used some of my son’s personal articles from his musashiboogie blog for this space. After reading them, Camilo Candelario, my boyhood buddy now based in Fallon, Nevada, e-mailed me that the son feels and sees better than the father. Lawyer and real estate developer Alex Bangsoy, my godson in his wedding to journalist Annabelle Copdiase, also dropped a line, to the effect that my yielding this column to my son would give readers their due. Recently, Johann, my son, found reason to write again. Without his knowledge and consent, and conscious of those comments from Milo and Alex, I lifted this piece from his musashiboogie blog. It’s for young parents like him and his wife Lovelyn (nee Pontino) who gave me my grandsons Lukie and Dylan. – RD.):

Dumaguing: Diabetic and Pregnant, What Now?

Friday, April 19, 2013 - 09:40 p.m.

GESTATION diabetes is a type of diabetes that only pregnant women get. It occurs in 2-5 percent of pregnancies. Normally, the stomach and the intestines digest the carbohydrates - rice, bread, potato, camote, noodles, etc- into a simple sugar glucose, which is our body's main source of energy. After digestion and its eventual absorption into the blood, glucose-also called blood or plasma sugar, is distributed to all cells to provide life-giving energy, in the form of ATP or adenosine triphosphate.

Padilla: Boston Marathon tragedy felt worldwide, Donaire out of champs boxing roster

Friday, April 19, 2013 - 09:40 p.m.

THE famed Boston marathon bomb last a few meters before the finish line last Monday which killed at least three people and injured over 180 runners and spectators echoed and reechoed all over the world. The annual 26.2 miles (42.195 km run) is one the most popular marathon run with a mighty throng of foreign footracers on the road. Other prestigious marathons include the New York edition, the San Francisco run and the London, England episode will be held tomorrow, Sunday.

Bautista: It's more Fun in God's Plan (part two)

Friday, April 19, 2013 - 09:39 p.m.

ONCE a week at a time when schedules have been met and when some "alone" time is called for, Joy and I together with the school's heads Atan and Vangie, we would meet for coffee or tea. These "breaks" allow us some sharing time for most things in life and what life brings us. Coming from previous academic lifestyles we get to "share" our experiences with each other. Remember even Joy has had her fair share of handling students as a teacher for basic accounting in HRM as I was for Management and Marketing with the same college.

Sungduan: Baking

Thursday, April 18, 2013 - 09:00 p.m.

LIFE is boring when it is all work and no play. If you are a very busy person there is a need to find a good diversion to keep you going in life. Why not try baking?

For the faculty and staff of the University of the Cordilleras learning baking has been a good stress-reliever from their very busy schedule in school. Thanks to the university’s workers union Kapatiran ng mga Empleyado sa University of the Cordilleras (Kapatiran) who thought of organizing a series of livelihood trainings which include baking.

Llanes: Politics 101: Selling yourself to the voters

Thursday, April 18, 2013 - 08:59 p.m.

IT’S less than a month before the midterm elections and the campaign for local positions is in high gear. Various forums have been ongoing and one thing noticeable is that most of the local candidates in the countries summer capital seem to have a hard time selling themselves.

In the communications industry, selling your story is very very critical. In fact, selling your story connotes selling yourself. A print or broadcast journalist must have credibility for it to have a following.
