PROGRAMMING is yet the best guarantee to stable prices of vegetables.
Even during the peak days for the sale of vegetables, oversupply of commodities was still experienced.
Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo
The peak days of vegetable purchases started December 20, with around 800 to 1,000 vehicles hauling vegetables for delivery to the markets in Metro Manila and other lowland provinces.
Agot Balanoy, secretary of the Benguet Traders and Truckers Association, said although demand for vegetables has peaked days before the celebration of Christmas Day, the trading post was still saturated with vegetables.
Farmers were not able to program their production, causing the oversupply of vegetables, Balanoy said.
As a result, disposers at the trading post as well as the traders did not realize their income. Oversupply oftentimes leads to decline in prices.
Production programming is being advocated to Benguet farmers to avoid the overproduction of agricultural crops and the instability of prices as well.
The scheme allows a grower to set a schedule on when to plant a certain commodity. (JC)
