Reputable hotel soon to rise

A HOTEL of good repute will rise just below City Hall.

Eurotel managing director William Go and company lawyer Christian Villar said that contrary to the apprehension of businessmen near where the building is being built, the structure will be a “regular” hotel and not a place of ill-repute, as claimed.

Before construction commenced, it is widely believed that Sogo, which happens to be owned by Eurotel Hotels, will be built in the property formerly owned by the Arvisu family, old-time Baguio residents.

Businessmen nearby are opposed to the construction claiming it would endanger residents, employees, and patrons, as well as existing structures nearby.

City Buildings and Architecture Office (CBAO) head Oscar Flores said Eurotel complied with all requirements, including zoning clearance and environmental compliance certificate. These were basis for the issuance of a building permit.

“That is why we were issued permits,” Go said in a recent appearance at the City Council.

The building will be six storeys, two floors reserved for parking. The hotel is near a school, offices, restaurants, a convenience store, bars, a gasoline station and other hotels that extend to Legarda Road.

Despite this, Cathy Arvisu-dela Rosa said the area’s heritage aspect should be preserved. She said the Zoning Ordinance is also specific about the preservation of places with historical significance to the locality.

“Should we change the ordinance just because there’s a new kid on the block?” dela Rosa asked.

Issues raised by the affected businessmen were referred to the committee on laws.

Councilor Fred Bagbagen said the referral will also address the possibility of revisiting the Zoning Ordinance.

Sogo is a lodging chain which has branches in Metro Manila, Cebu, Cavite, and Pampanga.

In an unsigned letter dated December 29 by the structural engineer of Eurotel, the management assured a retaining wall will be constructed to prevent erosion.

A blue sheet material would be used to cover adjacent properties to prevent dust from getting into surrounding restaurants. Pipe braces, scaffoldings and braces will also be installed to prevent accidents.
