'Session Road' should remain: Bautista

REACTING over a proposal to change the name of Session Road to Cory Aquino Street, Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. said it is better to retain the road's name.

The name of Baguio's most famous street should be retained.

He added this not only preserves the road's historical significance to Baguio, the public both here and abroad are more familiar with Session Road, than any other name.

He also said it is not proper to rename the road using the late President's name, for "she might not have even stepped on Session Road."

A proposal is pending at the City Council for the renaming of Session Road to Cory Aquino Street, in recognition of the late President's contribution to achieving democracy.

Session Road got its name from the fact that it leads up to the Baden Powell Hall, where the first Philippine Commission held its sessions from April 22 to June 11, 1904.

It was on one of their sessions where they officially named Baguio as the country's summer capital.

Session Road is divided into two: lower and upper or Session Road extension.

Lower Session Road extending eastward from Magsaysay Avenue (opposite the Plaza or Kilometer 0 and Malcolm Square) running through the central business district until it intersects with Father Carlu Street and Governor Pack Road.

Upper Session Road, on the other hand, extends from Post Office Loop, Leonard Wood Road, and the foot of Luneta Hill (where SM City Baguio is located) to the rotunda cutting towards South Drive (towards Baguio Country Club) and Loakan Road. (Rimaliza Opiña)
