COLLEGIATE sports takes center stage August as top universities and colleges in Baguio and Benguet brace for another colorful season of the Baguio–Benguet Educational Athletic League (BBEAL).

University of the Cordilleras (UC) is set to get the nod in hosting the 27th season of the annual collegiate sporting spectacle in the region.

EMA cup tees off with 120 golfers

CLOSE to 120 par busters from around the city took their time off as the 12th EMA Invitational Golf tournament teed off Saturday morning at the posh Baguio Country Club fairways.

The golf tournament, named after former youth representative lawyer Edgar Avila, will be a fund raising event to benefit Rotary Club of Baguio and for the Library of the Luntiang Karunungan Foundation.

Kenyans outpace locals

HAVING longer strides, Kenyans Albert Omboga and Samuel Taurus made it another foreign affair as they finished first and second, respectively, in the 1st Baguio-Benguet-Philex Marathon held during the weekend.

Omboga clocked a course record of 2:57:28 while compatriot and Taurus finished the tough 42-kilometer (42K) full marathon with a time of 3:02:12 that started at Scout Barrio traversing Loakan –Kias – PMA road all to way to Barangay Ampucao in Itogon, Benguet and back.

Baguio closes PNG with 60 golds

WITH stiffer competition this time around, Baguio City athletes failed to surpass last year’s medal haul to finish the weeklong Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission (POC-PSC) National Games with a 60-55-66 medal haul.

Arnis and wushu once again lifted the Summer Capital bets where they had 16-10-9 and 16-8-10 medal haul where Baguio was the overall champion in the two events last year’s staging in Dumaguete City.

IT was another disappointing night for Team Lakay last Saturday night at the One FC 9: Rise to Power event. It was even worse than the last event that we had been to. Again we went home frustrated, disappointed, dismayed and heart-broken. We lost, not just one but all of our fights.

Sun.Star Baguio prexy gets Abap VP seat

SUN.STAR Baguio president and former mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. was elected Friday afternoon as vice president of the re-organized Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines Inc. (Abap) following the first general assembly and organizational elections in Quezon City.

Prior to his new post, Bautista also served as the executive director for Northern Luzon in the old Abap known as the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines.

Baguio marathon fires off June 2

THE foreign-laced first Baguio-Benguet-Philex Marathon formally kicks off on Sunday with the hope of making the race a signature running event for the Summer Capital.

Firing off at four in the morning, the 42-kilometer (42K) full marathon will be topbilled by Eluid Kerring who is an early favorite together with five other Kenyans who will be joining the race hatched by Front Runner Magazine that will see some 500 runners from all over.

BAGUIO City archers came up with the most productive gold medal haul for the day as the Summer Capital eyes a title retention bid in the PSC-POC National in Pasig City.

The archers scored four gold medals including one silver and four more bronze medals while athletics bagged three more gold medals, two silver and one bronze.

Joel Bengtay, who earlier denied a spot in The NorthFace 100 (TNF 100), bagged top spot by finishing the tough Four Lakes 100K event with a time of 15 minutes and 57.10 seconds, while Marcelo Bautista earned his ninth trail running crown by winning Old Spanish Trail 60K.

CGFC tops two division in football tilt

CORDILLERA Goshenland Football Club (CGFC) pulls off separate victories in the six and eight under division to rule their respective age class in the second Goshen Land Summer Cup at the Brent Baguio football field recently.

Pitpitunge loses bantam crown via decision

CRISANTO Pitpitunge’s return to the ring failed to impress the judges as he lost his 135 lbs championship belt against a Japanese wrestling expert Michinori Tanaka in the mix martial arts (MMA) promotion Pacific X-treme Combat.

The one time bantamweight champion who is now a proud member of the Philippine National Police was overpowered by the Japanese to suffer his second defeat in six fights that include a first round knockout over Justin Cruz to win the belt eight months ago.
