Minero blasts UP-Baguio in Miners Cup

MINERO formally kicked off their campaign in the Miners Cup 3 with a big win over University of the Philippines (UP)–Baguio, 105-75, to kick off the open division of the tournament at the BCNHS Gym Monday evening.

Barely two months after winning the championship in bracket D of the Baguio Day Cup, Minero waxed hot early in the ball game to seize a 33-11 lead at the end of the first quarter in the tournament organized by SLU Boys High Club 7882.

And with a beefed up slate, six Mineros scored in double digit led by new recruit Elison Versola who had a game high of 24 points with sophomore Jervy Calivo adding 18 and veteran Richard Fablatin chipping in 14 markers.

Newcomers Rey Simangan and Jason Tan chipped in 12 and 11 points apiece while returning Minero Christian Doria added 10 points for their first win in the tournament supported by the Philippine Mining Safety and Environment Association.

Minero then limited UP-Baguio to only seven points in the first three minutes of the second period to post a 40-15 edge with 7:25 remaining in the second period and saw them pull ahead by as much as 32 points at the end of the first half, 63-31.

Midway in the third period, Minero was enjoying a 72-37 advantage in the ball game of the tournament also being backed by Philex Mines and Lepanto Consolidated Mining Corporation.

Danmark Leynes led UP with 18 points while Kevin Sarueste and Joshua Lee added 17 and 10 points, respectively.

In the other open division games, Philex also notched their first win in the tournament after downing Itogon Suyoc Resources Inc., 95-71, also at the BCNHS Auditorium.

Philex broke a 10 all count in the first period with 2:46 remaining and enjoy a 45–32 advantage right at the half.

University of the Cordilleras meanwhile stayed unbeaten after five games in the women’s division by edging CARAA bound Baguio Selection, 74–67, with Olive Alcantara leading the charge with 13 points.

ACMW meanwhile barely escaped past Ballers with a 51-56 win as Lewyn Mollejon of ACMW led all scorers with 21 points while Monica Tadeja and Ferlyn Malit had 18 and 12 points respectively for the Ballers.

UC earlier won the battle for third against Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Montessori, 90-80, with Renze Rashed Cosme firing a game best of 21 points with Karl Soriano and Mac Zapanta adding 19 and 10 points each. Roderick Osis
