Apayao starts prep for Caraa 2013

TABUK CITY, Kalinga -- Not even a last place finish will hinder Apayao from hosting the 2013 edition of the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (Caraa).
With the weeklong sporting spectacle of the region coming to a close, Apayao formally received the regional banner in hosting the annual event for student athletes from high school and elementary with close to 4,000 participating.

In fact, the province has skipped a grand celebration of its annual Say-am Festival coinciding with the founding anniversary of Apayao when it was separated with then Kalinga–Apayao province.
“We’re on the process of constructing as our engineering office and the Department of Public Works and Highways are now in full swing of finishing our sports facility,” said Xandred Ann Claveria of the Apayao Governor’s Office.
Apayao, with its sports development council in place, has bidded to host the Caraa next year after it signified to hold the event in 2013 where bulk of the sporting events to be done in Apayao.
“Hopefully, matapos lahat by September,” added Claveria.
Baguio once again proved its might after winning the over-all crown for both elementary and the secondary with Benguet coming in at second, while Abra dislodged perennial third placer Mt. Province who now occupy the number four position.
Host Kalinga province finished at number five while ifugao and Apayao was sixth and seventh in the over-all standings.
The Baguio Elementary squad took the championship in the arnis boys and girls, chess boys and girls, men's and women's gymnastics, rythmic gymnastics, swimming boys and girls, table tennis boys and girls, tae kwon do boys and girls, and volleyball boys.
The Summer Capital secondary team, meanwhile, took the crowns in arnis boys and girls, athletics boys and girls, basketball girls, boxing, chess boys and girls, men's and women's gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming boys and girls, tablew tennis boys and girls, tae kwon do boys and girls.
Benguet, meanwhile, snagged the overall crown in the athletics boys and girls and football in the elementary division and shared the top honors in boxing with Abra and then lorded it over in the archery girls, volleyball boys and the sepak takraw title in the secondary level.
Abra, who was tied for the over-all championship in boxing with Benguet also topped the basketball competition for the elementary and high school division while host Kalinga province shined in the sepak takraw and volleyball girls in the elementary together with their grandslam feat in secondary baseball.
Mountain Province topped the baseball, tennis for boys and girls in the elementary and the archery boys in the secondary level to land at number five as Ifugao and Apayao claimed the 6th and 7th place overall. (Roderick Osis)
