Wushu bets, grapplers shine in PNG

WUSHU Taulo players accounted for 13 gold medals while their sanshou counterparts accounted for five as wrestlers came home with four gold medals at the close of the 2012 Philippine National Games in Dumaguete City.

The last day gold medal haul accounted for the 78 gold, 74 silver and 52 bronze medals Baguio amassed in the in the Games organized by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission to win the overall championship.

Vanessa Jo Chan snared the female long weapon and short weapon titles in Group C to lead Baguio’s gold rush in wushu.


Other Baguio victors were Ron Joseph Cecilio (male taiji quan Group C), Jasmine Chan (female taiji quan Group C), Faith Liane Andaya (female long weapon Group A), Raphael Tuason (male long weapon Group A), Daniel Parantac (male fresstyle taiji quan Group D); Justin and Dustin Chan (male duilian Group C), Kariza Kris Chan and Natasha Laxamana (female duilian Group D), Engelbert Addongan, John Keithley Chan and Jacob Eleazar (male dullian Group D).

For the Wushu-Sanshou event, the gold medalists were Jean Claude Saclag (56kg) in the juniors division, Efren Marinias (48kg), Amado Benito (52kg), Geje Eustaquio (60kg), Gina Iniong (52kg), and Bernice Samidan (56kg).

The silver medalists on the other hand were Jhaymie Gayman (56kg) in the juniors division, Fraizel Gomez (48kg) also in the juniors division, Troy Bantiag (65kg), Rowena Minong (52kg) in the juniors division, and Tetchie Assudo (52kg).

Bronze medals were also brought home by Mhel Clinton Remolar (52kg) and Mark Stephen Loman (60kg), both in the juniors division.

Baguio grapplers also amassed its final-day mints in wrestling courtesy of Ismael Bandiwan in men’s 50kg class, Elvis Julius in men’s 74kg, Myler Empil in men’s 62kg, and Minalyn Foy-os in women’s 48kg.

Together with its 1-3-6 harvest in Greco-Roman, the Summer Capital collected a total 5-10-9 to nose out host Dumaguete (3-1-2 in Greco-Roman and 4-2-6 overall) for the general championship. (Roderick Osis)
