Organizers mulling world class boxing match for Baguio Day

BOXING is expected to get a big boost in the Summer Capital with the promise of staging a world class match featuring top caliber fighters.
Former light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol is being wooed by the camp of Shape Up Boxing Gym to headline the main event scheduled to happen on September 8 as part of the city’s charter anniversary.
Seven other undercards are also being lined up for the event, which will be topbilled by Cordillera’s upcoming boxers who will challenge fighters from all over the country, according to Tiu Co of the gym where Manny Pacquiao trains during his stay her in Baguio.
Tui Co added they are keen on pursuing a possible world title match for Mayol who also trains alongside Pacquiao, who also serves as his promoter during their brief training camp for the former welterweight champion.
The 30-year-old righty brawler recently defeated Mexican Julio Cesar Miranda in a unanimous victory. With the win, Tiu Co said his camp is closely coordinating a possible championship fight with either a Thai or Japanese for the match.
“This will be the biggest boxing match in the history of Baguio City once everything pushes through as planned,” added Tiu Co.
Prior to the September 8 event, the Shape – Up Boxing gym owner is also eyeing a July event to feature upcoming fighters from the Cordillera region seen as talent discovery for future boxing promotions.
Tiu Co said they will also seek partnership with the Highland Boxing Gym of Brico Santig for the fighters to see action in September. (Roderick Osis)
