THE biggest names in local MMA scene are set to strut their wares as Asia’s biggest mix martial event lands in Manila next month.
One Fighting Championship is set to bring in some of Asia’s best fighters to challenge the country’s undisputed fighters set tentatively on August 31 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Although no fight cards has been announced, Baguio based Team Lakay fighters are expected to headline the event with some of the country’s upcoming fighters also seen to grace the non-stop slam-bang competition.
“We hope to be a part of this big event and for us in Team Lakay like me, Kevin Belingon, Honorio Banario are very optimistic that we will be playing in front of our countrymen,” said eduard Folayang.
Folayang lost in a controversial split decision against Fil-Danish Ole Laursen, while Belingon had his first loss against Mazakazu Imanari via a reverse heel hook in the first round of their scheduled three-round encounter during April’s One FC event.
But Folayang said he was optimistic about the loss and in fact said he has to do some reflection on his techniques and training.
One FC will have its fifth event two months after its topbilled event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia which showcased the best fighters in Asia and two renowned names in the MMA.
Filipinos who are now with ONE FC includes Folayang, Laursen, undefeated featherweight prospect Eric Kelly, Wushu Xanda champion Geje Eustaquio, URCC lightweight titlist Banario, Jessie Rafols, URCC flyweight titlist Kevin Bellingon and unbeaten youngster Roldan Sangcha-an.
“These fighters are probably some of the best in the Asian region and we hope to bring in more Team Lakay fighters in the near future,” said One Fighting Championship chief executive officer Victor Cui during his November visit to the Baguio City.
The One FC top honcho added the partnership is eyed to develop a career for mix martial arts fighters in the country. (Roderick Osis)
