Green team overcomes Red; leads Apache sportsfest

THE Green team leaned on the heroics of Boogie Agustin and Del Claravall as it came out victorious in the bowling competition of the 2nd Apache Sports Fest.

Agustin had to seek help from Claravall in the ninth frame as the two led Green 1 to a 725-713 victory over erstwhile co-leader Red 1 in bowling Sunday at the Baguio Country Club and assume sole leadership.

Agustin completed a turkey en route to a game high 189 to lead Green 1 over the other unbeaten group in the four-color/team Apache Sportsfest.

The retired Air Force colonel was at his element as leadman for the Green and follow up their victory over what was supposed to be the strongest team on paper, Yellow, whom they beat, 671-556, the other Sunday.

With help from Nap Maranan, Joe Concepcion and Mannix Nerona, Green overcame the six-mark lead of their opponent and assumed the lead with a frame remaining.

The win gave Green a total of 1396, a 25-pin advantage over Red as the two teams shared leads in the two sports events being played.

In the other game, Jun David finally got his rhythm as he tallied 194 to lead Black 1, 683-537, to get into the win column. With David regaining his form, a 21-year hiatus from the game, Yellow now has 1239 pinfalls to stay at third spot, followed by the winless Black which has a measly 1091 pinfalls.

Red 1 finally fell, but to fellow Red, its second team as the team assumed joint first spot with similar 4-1 win-loss slate in the billiards side.

Last year's billiards champ Wayne Seo-as took the second slot from Jarvey de Leon for Red 1 and joined retired US Navyman Angel Villaralvo in the losing cause against fellow Red team of Taggy Tagudar and Dang Reyes, whose absence in bowling hurt Red 1's chances of beating Green 1.

Yellow 1 has a 3-2 card to stay at third spot along with Black 2, which fell to Black 1. They are followed by Green 1 (2-3) and Yellow 2 and Green 2, which both carry a 1-3 card. Black 1 is at the tailend with a 1-4 card.

Games in bowling and billiards resumed Sunday while games in darts and table tennis will begin on August 15.
