Benguet gym construction in full blast

COMPLETION of the 5,000-seater gymnasium is set to be realized within the next two years following the release of P10-million assistance from the Luzon Hydro Corporation recently.
The province is eyeing to host national and even international sporting events once the completion of the P51-million multipurpose gymnasium at the Benguet Sports Complex at Wangal, La Trinidad.
The P51-million budget for the ambitious project has been earned without the province securing loan from any institution, according to Benguet Governor Nestor Fongwan.
“High impact projects can be realized even without the local government unit like Benguet province securing huge loans from banks or other lending institutions,” Fongwan told reporters last week.
The multipurpose gym, which is undergoing construction, is being established courtesy of funds, which the Provincial Government received as cash award for its good governance.
Fongwan said the first P3-million fund was the cash award for the Gawad Pamana ng Lahi award in 2011, plus another P3 million for the same award this year.
Another P7 million was awarded to the Benguet Provincial Government by the Department of Interior and Local Government as cash prize being a recipient of the Seal of Good Housekeeping.
A P20-million donation was also given by the Office of the President, while Snap Benguet handed over P7 million as payment for the operation of the Ambuklao Dam, while the Provincial Government released a counterpart of P1.5 million to complete the needed P51 million fund.
Popular indoor sporting events, which can be held at the facility, are basketball, badminton, table tennis, volleyball and combative sports.
Similar facilities in Metro Manila are being utilized for big concerts and conventions.
The local chief executive likewise said they are exerting efforts to raise funds to install rubberized running tracks at the oval of the Benguet Sports Complex, while an Olympic-size pool will be constructed at the eastern part of the facility. (Roderick Osis)
