AS COMPLETION of the multi-million peso Apayao Eco-Tourism and Sports Complex draws near, the weeklong Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association is set February 27 to March 3 and expected to bring thousands of student athletes to the province.
Located in Luna town, Apayao Provincial Government is set to host the largest gathering of athletes in the region vying for medals in the 17 sports disciplines with the gold medalists assured a spot for the region’s contingency in the Palarong Pambansa.
“We are all set for the Caraa in Luna, Apayao,” said Agustin Gumuwang of DepEd Cordillera.
Bulk of the event will be played at the APETSC that includes the medal archery, athletics, baseball, chess, football, sipa/sepak takraw, softball, swimming, lawn tennis (secondary) and volleyball.
Events to be played in the other part of Luna are secondary basketball, boxing, gymnastics and table tennis.
The town of Pudtol meanwhile will host the competitions in arnis, taekwondo, and elementary lawn tennis while the municipality of Flora will hold the badminton event as Sta. Marcela gets the hosting of elementary basketball.
“It's 90 percent done,” said Governor Elias Bulut in an earlier interview. “When opening comes, the construction would be complete by that time.”
Construction of the multi-million sports complex started as early as February after Kalinga hosted the yearly sporting conclave with Baguio lording it over anew for the overall title.
Bulut said the province already allotted a total of P35 million for the construction of the sports complex, including the P5 million earmarked by Apayao Representative Eleanor Bulut-Begtang.
Baguio City remains to be the team to beat after lording the regional games in 2012 with a total 331 points coming from the 156 of the elementary boys and girls and the 175 points of the secondary boys and girls athletes while Benguet stayed close at 191 to stay in second with 88.5 points in the elementary and 102.5 from the secondary level.
It was the fourth time the since 2008 the Summer Capital has won the overall crown then held in Mt. Province.
